I'm WolfsbaneHex184 and I just got sorted. Gryffindor! I'm so happy.
I added Bonnie and Sass!

I'm still wondering what that question was about... I'm not on Pottermore, but maybe it was a tie breaker question if you're between two houses. Also, yesterday when I was putting together my armoire with my boyfriend, I realized he is totally a Gryffindor. This came from his not making sure the backs line up and fit together before drilling them in.

Ok, I've totally given up on it. I wasn't particularly arsed to begin with, but it's always forking down! Gah.

First I was pissed that all you guys had gotten on but I hadn't. Then I stopped caring. Then I got my welcome email and I got excited again. Now I half-heartedly try every once in a while but it's usually down and when it's up, it's really slow. Poo.

I'm having my own personal Harry Potter movie marathon as I lounge on my couch today and got to wondering... -What do they do on summer breaks? -Does Hermione have muggle friends she keeps in touch with? - What happens when only some family members are wizards? -What do they wear when they are away from school? The books mentioned they wear robes all the time, in the movies they are always in normal clothes in their free time. - How is Harry doing homework at his aunt and uncle's if he isn't allowed to do magic away from school?
Okay I'm a big dork, but feel like this is a real world and want to know more about everything. What else would you like to know if you could?

I want to know how wizarding children have any kind of writing skills if they don't have English classes!

I was just wondering about the mixed family thing earlier today, would a Muggle parent need to have someone else take their child school supply shopping?
Do they bother teaching them math and English?

Do they bother teaching them math and English? Hermione's parents go to Diagon alley with her. How they get wizard money to afford the stuff is another question. Maybe they teach all the math/English they'd need in whatever they go before Hogwarts? :p

Hermione took arithimacy, but it was an elective class. I never thought about the whole math/english classes thing, but now it's really bothering me. Wizards are expected to enter the work force when they graduate at 18, and they would definitely need more english and math training than they would have gotten from any homeschooling they would have received before age 11.

I think the books mention Hermione's parents had to exchange money at Gringotts.
Reading, writing, and math seem to not be mentioned. Also, why quills and ink instead of pens and pencils? Not to mention candle light.
Okay they are books and movies not real life, but I feel like they are part of my real life. Once again, big dork=me

chiveggie wrote: I think the books mention Hermione's parents had to exchange money at Gringotts. You are correct, Gringotts does currency exchanges. I always kind of wondered about English, but figured maybe the parents are expected to do that instead of the school? I mean, they can obviously read and write. I think if my kiddo stayed home with me until she was 11 then she would be able to read very well once she got whisked off to magic school. As for math...do wizards actually need anything beyond basic math? Because why go through the trouble of multivariate calculus to solve a problem if you can just wave your magic wand? I'm super excited over HP stuff because I just got the Burrow lego set (for half off). It's pretty nifty and has two fire cannons PLUS a fireplace that flips around. My poor child has been far too immersed in my geekery over the past few weeks.

I always assumed this was the case. and I feel like I remember JK Rowling saying at one point that kids are supposed to be home schooled/taught by their parents until age 11.

I thought I remembered something about exchanging Muggle money for Wizard money; I just got stuck on how they'd get there.

Ok guys, how about this one. I'm reading the first book to my toddler right now, and something stood out to me that I hadn't noticed before.
When Hagrid goes to the house in the middle of the ocean to deliever Harry his letter, he tells Harry that he flew to get there. Flew?! We seriously don't see many cases of flying wizards in the books - members of the Order are freaked out later on in the series when they discover that LV can fly. Perhaps he took a thestral, but could they hold that much weight? Apparition also seems like a possibility, but Hagrid never got to that part of his training in school. I'm realizing now that Dumbledore probably fixed Hagrid's wand with the elder wand once he started working for him (That's another things that really bothers me - when a student gets expelled they break the wand. How can they function at all in the wizarding world without one?!) Perhaps Dumbledore also gave him some private lessons to get him trained up a bit? I'm just babbling now, but the fact that Hagrid says so casually that he flew there is bugging me a lot.

It bothered me from the first reading that I didn't' know who they got off that darned island in the ocean. Did the book say?

The book never said how they got off the island and it always used to bother me how Hagrid got there - would he really just leave a broom or the motor bike sitting there and then leave in the boat with Harry? Plus, how did the Dursleys get off the island later?
After I read the fifth book, I kind of assumed a thestral when I re-read it, but it's never explicitly stated that's what it was.
It also bothers me that Harry couldn't see the thestrals until later. The explanation was apparently that while he saw his mother's death, he was too young for it to really have meaning. Which I would be ok with, if he didn't hear his parents dying when he gets close to the Dementors. Obviously, it did have an impact if it's his worst memory and he did understand what it meant. It's not a huge deal and it doesn't stop me from reading the books a million times, but it just seemed really inconsistent to me.

Not as perfect maybe but as long as the wand chooses allegiance to them it's not too bad. As far as the elder wand thing, I just watched Deathly Hallows pt. 2 and Harry never fixes his broken wand with the elder wand! Boo on that.

I'm fairly certain that Hagrid took Sirius's flying motorcycle to the hut on the rock. I guess I always assumed that he just went back in the boat later to get the bike, cause he had to have some way of getting to Hogwarts (since I'm pretty positive he can't Apparate) and I don't think he goes on the train...
And Mars, every time I watch that movie it drives me BANANAS that he doesn't fix his wand!! He LOVED that wand! Are we supposed to think he just keeps Malfoy's old wand from then on? Ugh.

so, my kid put in a request for pottermore 100 years ago, recently got the email, and when she went to login, it wouldn't accept her password. She tried three times and it was locked. She is miserable. any ideas?

Maybe have her start from scratch? Since the site is now officially launched, I imagine that 100 years ago it was still in beta mode and that could make it glitch with this version maybe.
P.S. I'm super excited about this now. I wasn't too excited until I watched my boyfriend get chosen by his wand. It was epic, and suited him so perfectly. I want a wand to suit me perfectly! Also, he got sorted into Ravenclaw which has always been his favorite house. So, this website is pretty smart methinks.
