Really PETA?

This thread reminds me of something I've been meaning to ask and I'm too lazy to make a new thread so I'll just post it here.

A lot of omnis keep telling me PETA euthenizes loads of homeless animals, trying to use it as a way to discredit veganism (I guess they think peta represents the thoughts, actions, and opinions of all vegans everywhere...). If you google this you'll find a bunch of wacky anti-PETA websites and a few seemingly legit blogs/online news sites that sorta discuss the issue but don't say anything definitive (at least the few articles I've read). I didn't even know peta had animal shelters. Strangely, I've never heard any veg'ns address this ever! It just sounds so bizarre to me!

Anyone know the real story here?

I think they do kill animals they save because they say there's not enough space for them? And that it's better than letting them live. Not sure about the circumstances.

They are against no-kill shelters, and apparently they do euthanize and do run shelters. I actually find PETA surprisingly reasonable on this issue, but my past experience volunteering at an open admissions shelter has definitely colored my views on this.

Well, their adoption rate is tragically low. No-kill or not, I can't figure out an excuse for this and fail to see anything reasonable about it. When other shelters with much less money have a much higher adoption rate, something is amiss.

But when people talk about them killing animals, they probably are referring to this infamous incident:

I guess most of the time I don't think about it too much because Peta are such a no go for me anyway, especially when it comes to sexism.

Yeah, that's pretty horrible, and I wasn't aware of it. I was just referring to their position on no-kill - I'd been expecting them to bash any shelter that ever euthanized an animal.
