Mississippi defeats the life-begins-at-conception initiative.

Mississippi validates the faith I had in it.
(My faith was that Mississippi voters were not 100% evil, so the bar was set low. Still, a celebration for Mississippi!)

Yeah, that initiative was just way too extreme, even for someone who might be anti-abortion. Only the craziest of the crazies want to ban birth control, or abortion in cases of incest or rape.

I live on the border with MS, I know a lot of people in MS (including my whole family), and in fact I lived in MS until June of this year. I am so happily shocked at the outcome! Plus, it helped me purge a bunch of people from my 'friends' list on facebook, so that's nice too.

Well, in the polls before the election it was looking split almost equally on people for and against it with about 10% undecided. So, if people understood the initiative, and told the truth in polling, close to half of Mississippi voters are the craziest of the crazies. Does anyone know by what percentage the bill was actually defeated?

32 precincts haven't reported yet, but Amendment 26 went down 58-42%. 346,699 people voted for it, or about 130,000 fewer people than those who voted against, which doesn't make me feel great about the uptick in local and national governments wanting to, y'know, criminalize my gender. I'm sure they'll stick it back on the ballot next time, and more states will be voting on this in the months and years to come. Whee, America!

I think the thing was that a lot of people didn't exactly know what the initiative included. Once people really started hearing about it, and reading articles saying things like certain types of birth control could be made illegal, women who have miscarriages could be accused of murder and all that crepe (also that the state's census numbers would be all out of wack because fetuses would have to be counted as well, if that's not crazy enough for you), I think some of them got panicky.
I thought these people were supposed to be against Big Government? What gives?

Not a single county went for gay marriage in Mississippi when it was on the ballot. The counties that voted for Obama killed this anti-choice bill. There are parallels to be drawn but I'm done hoping the veterans of one civil rights battle will join to fight another. Doesn't seem like it's ever going to happen.
