Jack Hanna was on Rachel Maddow (or somewhere else, I saw him a few places), and he said the problem was the tranqs take 4 minutes to work, and one tranqed tiger had to be killed when it seemed like the vet was in danger of being attacked.

Hanna also said that he has been working with the governor to figure out how to set up the legislation to be enforcible and they had started building temporary holding areas for seized animals. The legislation that existed before had no resources behind it, so wouldn't have prevented anything anyway. They would still have had to find somewhere to put all these animals, plus the qualified personnel to handle the situation. So it isn't quite fair to say the new governor was doing nothing. It all sounds logical to me.

Horrible, horrible, sickening situation.

Apart from the fact that the animals were "exotic" and considered dangerous, this, unfortunately, is not that unique of a story.

crasshole establishes lifelong pattern of abusing and neglecting animals.

crasshole is charged with animal cruelty.

crasshole continues to be permitted to keep animals.

Animals suffer and die.

Holy forking shiitake. I saw this story really early in the morning (before I was fully awake) and thought it was just a dream or something. I completely forgot about it until I saw this thread. This is chilling as fork.

nothing different than any of the other animals that were killed, but for some reason that one pushed me over the crying-edge I was already very close to. I had also avoided any pictures until I signed the petition, and ugh. ugh ugh ugh.

um . . . they think he got eaten.

This story peas me off so bad. The most irritating is when they said on the news, "this now brings up the question, should wild animals be kept in this sort of environment?" Of course not! You're just now coming to figure this out?!

Sigh.

Quote:
The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium said it took the six surviving animals with Marian Thompson's permission but has no legal rights to the animals. It said her lawyers notified the zoo that she will reclaim the beasts, possibly as early as Thursday.

Ugh. Isn't there some way that an animal welfare organization, or even the zoo, can petition for custody based on the conditions these animals were kept in even before they were released?

Apparently she won't get them after all, at least not now.

Esquire magazine has a great piece on this tragedy. It's hard to read, though, as you can imagine.

You know, I'd forgotten there was a thread on the ppk about this until it got bumped.

There was an update on one of the leopards that had survived. Apparently they were moving the animal and the gate came down and caused serious spinal injury. The leopard was euthanized because the injury was that bad.

More info here:

Spoiler: show

(I put the link as spoiler as I consider the wording of the link to the Columbus Dispatch to be triggering.)

I feel sorry for the police involved and don't blame them at all. I'm really not sure what else they could have responsibly done in that situation. Of course the main blame lies with the man who kept them all, but even then it's pretty clear he was mentally unstable. The law-makers who decided that wild animals were just fine for any old citizen to aquore are ones who should be feeling really guilty.

Just an update...I continue to follow this story because it was so horrific...The widow of the guy who killed himself just paid the back taxes on the property and also has taken custody of the five surviving animals. Out of all that carnage...only six animals survived that day. One was euthanized at the zoo after an accident at the zoo.

"Thompson's payment comes a week after two surviving leopards, two primates and a bear were returned to the farm. They had been held for months at the Columbus zoo under a state quarantine order that Thompson challenged."

I still take interest when I see stories about the aftermath of this horror. The widow of the guy who killed himself is holding an auction of the estate. Items up for auction include cars and motorcycles and such, plus a three dozen horses, donkeys and ponies. Hopefully that will be the end of the story, though I don't know what happened to the few exotic animals that survived the massacre and were returned.
