...Instead, she got an email reply so dripping with condescension and an absolute lack of knowledge as to how the Internet, blogs and copyright work that we're all left wondering how this "editor," Judith Griggs, got that title.

Here's the most mind-boggling part of the email for me.

But honestly Monica, the web is considered "public domain" and you should be happy we just didn't "lift" your whole article and put someone else's name on it! It happens a lot, clearly more than you are aware of, especially on college campuses, and the workplace. If you took offence and are unhappy, I am sorry, but you as a professional should know that the article we used written by you was in very bad need of editing, and is much better now than was originally.

The whole "you should really be paying me" part is gold.

ETA: I don't know if they cut it out of that article, but it's here: http://www.boingboing.net/2010/11/04/to ... ice-d.html

Whoa, seriously? That reply is heinous. I think my first question would've been, "if you thought it was so bad why did you STEAL IT to begin with?"

I live in New England and I'm pretty sure I've seen this magazine, and that it's a little pissant free thing they have at the end of supermarket checklanes, if I'm thinking of the right one.

The response from the editor about how the blogger should pay THEM for editing the article, so forking ridiculous! I checked out their facebook page, full of angry comments. I hope they believe there is no such thing as bad press...

How unbelievably shitty!

I just tried to visit the Cooks Source website, and it appears to be down. Perhaps too much traffic?

hahaha that is the best part. I think I found my new job. I'm going to go around editing blog posts all over the internet, publishing them as a small zine and then I'll sit back and watch the money roll in.

This is fascinating in a car-wreck kind of way. I wonder what her real work experience is, because it's got to be hard to work in publishing for 30 years without accidentally acquiring some understanding of copyright law.

Was wondering when this would make it to the PPK. The social media firestorm, to be cliche, has been insane. This thing made it to BoingBoing and had over 300 comments on the magazine's FB page in less than 12 hours.

I feel bad for the student/blogger that got ripped off. Especially when her only request was to have a donation made to her journalism school.

I want to see it now. I need to know whether they thought the Middle English spelling was among the bits "in very bad need of editing."

In the time span that I opened this thread for the first time and just now, the Cooks Source facebook page went up 900 fans.

Original article.

Plagiarized article.

Yes, the parts "in very bad need of editing" are medieval vernacular.

Edit: the plagiarized version has been removed. How much do you want to bet they made a complaint about copyright infringement to Facebook?

Yep. The fact that the editor of a magazine didn't know that (even if they weren't a Middle English expert anyone with a decent amount of reading comprehension should have been able to piece that together) makes me despair that I didn't go into that field. I immediately thought of you when I saw the original article too!

From what I could tell, they took down their FB page and someone put up a spoof one? Unless I was misunderstanding.

I know they created a fake twitter and a fake Judith Griggs on facebook, but I'm pretty sure that facebook is (or was) theirs. They have pictures dating back to 2009, anyway, so it was at least around then. I know some people have good hax0r skills that they put to good use, though, so they might not even have control over their own page now.

I got confused because the blogher link isn't working so I had assumed they had taken down their facebook page and the other one looks like it was taken over/isn't being controlled by them.

Oh and also looks like they ripped off both Martha Stewart and NPR?

Martha will f you up.

Me, too! Among other things, it's been one of my go-to resources for slide images for years!

My friend is the original blogger who made this go viral--the victim was his friend and she asked his advice! He blogged about it, others re-posted. . . and the internet went ca-ray-zee. Pretty awesome victory for writers, IMO.
