Yeah, I think I just can't wrap my head around a place where they had to convince the waiters that no, no, the guy REALLY WAS having a heart attack. Restaurants should not require a safeword.

I've never gotten around to sigging anyone, but I think this may be my first.

Are you sure? Maybe time to open a new kind of restaurant then. It will be more interesting than the Heart Attack Grill, and there will only be eating of tiny morsels fed to you by the person you let tie you into some constricting position of your choice, so little chance of getting health issues from eating the food there.

Also, what is "special sauce"? That always sounds suspicious to me.

Years ago I my best friend and I made detailed plans about the restaurant we would open.
It would be called "The Plague" (or maybe "Peste", we never got that hammered out), and on the menu would be the Plague of the Day.
It would be, of course, dark, dank and the kind of place where you don't want to look too closely at the floor or the silverware. You would immediately be given a shot of vodka at the door "to bolster your courage" or "for medicinal purposes", your choice.
The waitstaff would be unwashed characters out of Kafka, with makeup bruises a la William Gibson's Idoru. The food horrible, with an angry raging chef who would come out to scream at complainers. The only real draw would be the S&M service ("you will eat this slop and you will like it"). I am sure we could work constriction into the plan somehow!

There was a thread in the parlor. The guy had a family history of heart disease.

Someone on my facebook veg group said "whoever eats this has kind of earned his or her death." Messed up. I would have said something, but this is the same person that gave a bunch of rambling nonsense replies to another comment I made before and accused me of being a "carnist."

So much compassion...it makes me tear up. You should respond anyway...

When vegans get sick does that mean they earn it? That's my question.

Ha. She started out by saying "I'm sorry I know it's not compassionte but..." I don't know what to say, everything I think of sounds pretty mean.

Tee hee... Can you imagine such a person making a compelling case for encouraging people to care about non-human animals or the conditions on factory farms?

Seriously though I feel sort of bad for people who have let their health get out of control, things do happen that no one can prevent, but I hate that our society encourages such unhealthy gluttony.

In the other thread I mentioned no one knows how the person ate, other than they loved the restaurant. They could've had a small hamburger, they could've had the 9,000 calorie hamburger, who knows? Anyway, I think it'd be nice if a restaurant such as this wasn't celebrated but people have the right to make their own decisions about what they eat. For those perhaps that grew up on McDonald's and such, things like this seem normal.

For the record, the smallest burger available at the Heart Attack Grill is the Single Bypass Burger with a half a pound of beef (plus cheese and bacon). This is twice as big as the largest burgers at both McDonald's and Burger King. So even if he was choosing the smallest burger every day, he was eating a massive amount of meat per day. I doubt that there's a single doctor out there who would recommend that kind of consumption for someone with a history of cardiac disease in their family. Might he have died young anyway if he was eating a healthier diet? Of course. You can do everything "right" and still get sick and die. But can we really deny that this is a risky way of eating considering his family history? I don't think so.

Does that mean I think he deserved his death or that it should the punchline of a joke? No. And I also don't think it's any of our business. Just like I think it's entirely up to someone whether or not they want to smoke cigarettes, and I don't think it's funny or deserved if they die from a smoking-related illness. It's still tragic, and worthy of our compassion, as far as I'm concerned.
