I think my brain froze up at the idea of letting muscles deliberately atrophy so as to not look fat.

I had heard of that idea before. I remember reading an interview by a French model who said she couldn't exercise at all because any leg or arm muscle would make her too "fat" for runways.

Wow. I guess I shouldn't be surprised at this point but it seems so absurd to me.

Totally. I was a teen when I read this... I guess the silver lining is that the takeaway message for me was that model thinness was absolutely unattainable for normal people who walk places and carry their own groceries and like to get sweaty once in a while (not to even mention eating habits).

Everything is wrong with this. EVERYTHING.

As someone who has derived huge feelings of empowerment, strength, and general awesomeness from cycling (not to mention a bigger and WAY more awesome asparagus), the thought of "trainers" not "letting" their clients ride bikes because it might increase their butt size or give them muscles seems downright sinister. God forbid the ladies get a taste of a kind of exercise that helps them feel strong and empowered and conquer their insecurities. Then they might not want to pay that trainer to make them feel like shiitake about themselves.

After my weekly heavy lifting training sessions, I spend a few minutes butt nekkid examining my asparagus in the mirror in the locker room. Everyone must think I am crazy, but I love my giant muscular tush.

Teen you was super reasonable!

I get crazy excited when I can see any kind of muscle definition. I'm fat, but when I was belly dancing regularly I had abs I could see for the first time in my life!

College Humor did a bit on thigh gap. It seems pretty accurate and was entertaining to me. I hope this is an appropriate thread to share it in:

I'm not sure how to embed...

Ugh, this caterer we work with at my job (who is a pretty cool guy to work with otherwise) said exactly this tonight:

"Whoa, (Vijita), you managed to find a new girl (employee) who's even skinnier than you!

(Silence)

Wait....was that offensive? Sorry if that was offensive."

Me: "I'm not offended, but you did just make a comment about my body weight and that of a coworkers, and that's not really cool."

Him: "Oh sorry! I'm sorry! I didn't think you would be offended because it's about you being skinny, not fat!"

Me: "No, all of what you said isn't really okay."

Him: "SORRY! Sorry sorry sorry...(etc etc etc)"

New employee passes by and checks in with me for direction.

Him: "Sorry! We were just talking about how skinny you guys are!"

Me: No, we weren't. Anyway, (change topic)

Him, to new coworker, as she leaves: "I didn't mean to offend!"

When she has left: "Oh boy, I messed up. I always forget that skinny girls don't like to be called skinny."

FACEPALM, THE END.

About what I would expect from a fashion magazine. Sad, but not surprising. I remember hearing maybe 10 years ago how women supposedly shouldn't use stair steppers because their butts and thighs got too big, and too much pilates might actually give you a thick waist. Because, you know, the purpose of exercise is solely to achieve an arbitrary standard of beauty...

Fun story: I just learned from a trusted friend that one of the reasons (the primary reason) I wasn't welcomed into my work community was that I wasn't deemed "attractive" by my (all male) coworkers. Because that is relevant to being a pilot...in some way I am currently missing.

What. on. earth.

I'm pretty sure in the sub community that if someone shows up to duty days on time and doesn't screw up his work, it wouldn't matter if he were Medusa herself. (And I hope that doesn't change as the boats integrate women.)

This is an issue solely because I'm a woman. The guys are not concerned at all with how the other guys look. So, annak, I would expect that to change as the boats integrate. Don't you know that women OWE men makeup and flirting and an arbitrary standard of beauty?

Invictus, I'm so sorry that happened to you. I have to say I've told my husband about you because I thought what you do is really awesome. I work in a male dominated field, not as dominated as flying helicopters... but yeah and it does suck sometimes on what we have to do as women to prove ourselves.

Sigh. I'm sure you're right. I imagine most of the next few years will be spent crushing my hopes of people being able to be forking professionals.

I almost cried when I heard about it, even though I pretty much knew that's how the guys discussed and thought of women they work with. It was the first question nearly every guy in the squadron asked when they found out I was coming in a couple years ago, the CC and DO being exceptions to that.

I am so, so tired of struggling against this system. I can not wait to get out. That thought is what gets me through the day.

The flip side is if they deem you conventionally attractive they have the entitlement to sexually harass you all day! Weeeeeee! People are the worst.

And, of course, if you're "too" conventionally attractive you can't possibly also be intelligent or capable.

(I am not saying this has been my personal experience, mind you.)
