I had braces a few years ago but it didn't change the look of my teeth. I was grinding my teeth down due to how my teeth were shaped so it was for medical reasons, not looks. I say do whatever seems right but sometimes braces can be a medical necessity vs looks.

Oh my god. The 'British' (whatever that means to people... do not get me even started) having the worst teeth ever is a GIGANTIC forking peeve of mine. I'm sure I've written about this several times over. Including pure forking very recently. I have always perceived it to be about pissing on the NHS rather than genetics, however? I dunno though. But yeah, there has always appeared to me to be some huge bullshittery thing about people in the UK having terrible teeth and people in the US having "WINNING SMILES!!!" What is that all about?

Yeah the winning smiles is just people putting braces on their kids as soon as possible. That's it, there's nothing less jacked about our tooth genetics. My grill ain't completely jacked so my parents never even considered it, but I have a few teeth that went rogue in the growing in process. I've never held it against them. My teeth, I mean, totally hold it against my parents.

I had braces for years and I never smile if I can help it. It's kinda my thing.

People are so forking weird about teeth. I take great care of my teeth and every time I see my dentist he compliments me on how perfect they are (never had a cavity or anything like that), but I don't whiten them because I think it's stupid. My two middle, top incisors are much bigger than the rest of my teeth and they have a gap, which I used to be really self-conscious about when I was a kid. But they are really nicely aligned and everything, no staining or whatever, so I really lucked out. But everyone I know is borderline obsessed with whitening their teeth and they are constantly at me to bleach them.

Is it really normal to bleach your teeth where you guys live? I used to want to bleach my teeth when I was very eating disordered and worried my bulimia was ruining my teeth. But now I think, why would I put even more stress on my teeth?
And I know no one who's got bleached teeth. I think.

You can buy over the counter bleach whitening products in the US and there are some type of light systems that are supposedly for whitening teeth that I've seen advertised. I guess people do it a fair amount?

I have calcification in my front teeth so I have some whitish spots, my dentist offered to 'fix' it so it didn't look like that. I can't even notice.

I never had braces and I never smile if I can help it either, but that's because I'm a huge bisque.

I remember seeing the British/American teeth thing in a book by a British author once. It was a sort of tongue-in-cheek book, written for a British audience, about how to interact with people from various countries. The part about Americans started out with something like, "If you are talking to an American, then this person probably seems fairly normal, except that you can be almost certain that he has had a round of orthodontia."

As of this weekend, I have officially had enough with the 'concern' of absolute strangers over how my tattoos will look when I'm 80. I suppose they will forking look like the rest of me: old, saggy, and wrinkled. Is there some rationale behind "saving myself" for when I'll be old? My reasoning is, I've only got this body for about 100 years or less, and it's only going to be in this good condition for another 15, 20 years tops, so why not use it and enjoy it while I can?

Another thing to consider is that by the time I'm 80 all these people who worry about how I'm going to look will be long dead and gone. And all the young people will look at my old, saggy, wrinkly tattoos and roll their eyes about what a square old grandma I am, because by then the fashion will be to stick a railroad spike through your buttcheeks or graft maple leaves onto your forehead or something.

So just back the fork off, rude old woman, and stop worrying about how a complete stranger is going to look in fifty years as a result of her completely harmless choice that affects only her!

my grandfather is in his 80s, and his tattoo still looks rad. anyway, one of the things i'm looking forward to most about being an old saggy bag is not having to give a whit what any of me looks like. i wish i could get a preview of my ancient self; then i could tattoo "BOO!" in a place that'll be in a fold in fifty years, so i could surprise people with it.

What's really weird is that I've heard people say that that's something they actually care about in a potential partner. That they're only attracted to people with good teeth. Or that it's up there with a good sense of humor. I just don't understand, it's like saying I only want someone with a good nose. Who even? Why? Where are we?
The "good teeth" thing also carries a whiff of that weird old "good breeding stock" trope: "Okay...strong flanks, not too long in the withers, good teeth, looks like a capable breeder. I'll take it!"

Hah, just laughed out loud at work.

My (STBX) husband has a gap between his two front teeth and so do I. I had no idea it was considered a "fault" until I was well into adulthood. My dad had it, my brothers have it, two of my 3 kids have it. We are all a handsome bunch. (In fact, probably due to my attraction to my husband, I find it sexy).

My boss and her sister were talking about their brother the other day. I lost track of the number of times they described him as a "fat lazy shiitake". It was every other line.

They both have major body issues about themselves too. it's sad.

This happened a couple days back, but it's still bothering me so I'm going to whine at you all about it. Best Ever History Prof sent me a picture of Boyfiend looking exceedingly pleased with donuts. So I told my dad because he asked why I was smiling, and he just said "[Boyfiend] doesn't need donuts."

The actual fork? What makes him think it's okay to comment on my boyfriend's body?

I am so self-conscious about my teeth and I know I need to just get over it. They are reasonably straight (after a childhood full of braces and horrible jaw-expansion torture devices), but they are not white, and it's the first thing I notice about myself in the mirror and in photos. Even my friend commented on it once, asking me "why are your teeth yellow??" (she was talking about bleaching her own teeth at the time...) I don't even want to smile when people get too close to me because I'm afraid it's all they'll look at and think I'm gross.

I drink like 8 cups of tea a day. I'm never going to have white teeth. They are clean and healthy though - I've never had a cavity and I brush and floss at least 3 times a day.
