If you read the article it argues for both less meat consumption and *more intensively* produced meat in order to reduce amount of land used and free up more resources for bio-energy crops. i.e. more CAFOs, more monogastrics, less grazing. Which I find fascinating because the message from folks in the enviro community is less meat and eat more sustainable meat. This is saying eat less meat and eat more meat from industrial agriculture. Depending on where you stand on the issue (not so great for HSUS, but good talking point for McWilliams) this is either great or kind of unfortunate. Maybe I missed it but I don't think the authors discussed the value of grazing lands as carbon sinks. I'm really curious what ends up lowering emissions more, keeping last as pasture for grazing or growing crops for biofuels (which I guess you then capture the carbon from...).

Grass-fed cows produce more greenhouse gases, I know. (Per cowpita, I mean.)
