I think pulling in Paul Ryan has done what it was supposed to do... nobody's talking about Bain Capital anymore.

I'm betting this is only a temporary distraction. The focus is indeed now on Ryan and the cuban population in FL though.

Look, he believe in equality of opportunity, not equality of outcome. Which is why he favors a 100% estate tax.

I don't know about that. In terms of republicans these days, I don't find Romney to be particularly scary or alarming. This isn't to say I like the guy, but stack him up next to Palin, Bachmann, Perry, Santorum, etc? He seems like a great guy in comparison. Ryan is scary and alarming.

My dad, who is not an Obama fan, and increasingly disenchanted with him (though I'm pretty sure he voted for him) has been tepidly supporting Romney for various reasons. He is now saying that he will grudgingly vote for Obama just because of Ryan.

I think this pick will swing a lot of the on-the-fence moderates back to Obama, especially the more fiscally conservative but socially liberal voters. We have scads of them here in Virginia, despite our appalling excuse for a governor.

So, um, good job Romney?

Romney changes his point of view depending on his audience. I don't think he has any real principles. I'm mostly concerned about the people he surrounds himself with. We are in for a world of shiitake if Paul Ryan becomes vice president, but I don't think he will. Ryan's views are so extreme they're only going to appeal to the Republican base, and those people were already voting for Romney anyway. Dude is going to be a turnoff for anyone else who is paying any attention.

I mean, unless you like the idea of back alley abortions, starving children, and destitute grandparents. In which case, he's your guy! I'm being hyperbolic, but the guy's policies are seriously scary.

There is a disadvantage to having someone super far right on your team. My grandparents are pretty hardcore Republicans and vote Republican in every election. When Paladino was running for the governor position here in NY, he was essentially the only Republican running and he made such an asparagus out of himself that my grandparents ended up voting democrat for the governorship.

Ah, that whole "equal opportunity, not equal outcome" thing peas me off so much.

It sounds great on paper, and I agree with it (we cant possibly ensure equal outcomes because that is a factor of what an individual does, but we can do our best to provide equal opportunities so that the outcomes are attainable) "equal opportunity" doesnt mean what they think it means. Can we make all of these people go teach in a low SES school district for a week? And then let them come talk about "equal opportunity?"

Dude intends to cut the non-defense research budget by 5%, since we all know that no one needs new treatments for diseases that aren't profitable or protection for the environment and other such nonsense.
