ETA: I don't know if this is "positive" as such, it's not like the people whose lives he hurt aren't still suffering, but at least this feels like it might possibly deter other shitbags with a total lack of empathy from believing they can get away with harassing and blackmailing women in this heinous manner.

What a total shitbag! There really need to be tougher laws with things like this.....you shouldn't be able to post pictures of someone like that without their written permission!

The PPK has definitely made me a better feminist. I'm much better at speaking up about unconscious biases than I was a few years ago -- e.g. TED just posted a list of books and I commented that I found it puzzling that no female authors were included on that list. Now a discussion is happening. That's rad.

Today while I was out shopping with my husband, he noted that since I changed my hair (it's now very short, frequently styled in a fauxhawk, has lots of natural grey and a few purple streaks), way more random people (almost always women) compliment me on it. I said that my guess is it isn't necessarily because they love my hair, they're just expressing appreciation for my willingness to wear my hair in a way that goes against society's idea of acceptable feminine beauty. A few years ago if I had said something like that, my husband would have at least rolled his eyes, and more likely argued with me, but today he was like "yeah, I think you're right." I feel like I've not only become a better feminist in recent years, but I've helped my husband become a better feminist too, and that makes me so happy.

I was pondering my favorite tank today (Nobody Cares About Your Stupid Boner) and realized with an excited gasp that I have not been harrassed once in Austin. Good show, Texas, this must be those southern manners everyone talks about! I was discussing it with my tattoo artist today, who moved here three years ago from Brooklyn, and she said that now she thinks on it, she's only been catcalled/harrassed once since she moved here.

I did not wear the tank, because Austin has escaped my wrath. Thanks, Austin dudes, for being polite and respectful!

Well, that was a nice run. Got harrassed tonight. "hey gorgeous, where you going?" I said "fork OFF" but should have said "I'm going to your girlfriend's house to eat her kitten, limp dick"

Guess I'm putting on my tank top tomorrow!

Featuring such great lines as "Don't make me mute you on this conference call" and "To the old boys who think that women are going to challenge your thrown, you should know that you're making your y-chromosome look small on your own".

Barbara Lee (D-Oakland) has been one of my favorite US reps since civics class in high school. Here's an interview with DN! where she talks about a "sea of change" -- i.e. a bill to expand access to abortion and contraceptives and etc. for women across the US. http://www.democracynow.org/2015/7/9/a_ ... _100_women

I loved this article about "Nice Guys."
http://everydayfeminism.com/2015/10/nic ... t-believe/

Quote:
Believing that basic human decency makes someone a “good guy” means that men can get away with a whole lot before becoming bad guys.

I just posted about this in the other thread, but I also wanted to make some positive comments. I feel so incredibly lucky to be able to claim two of the people who gave interviews for this article as my mentors, letting their names be used so that victims—often younger, more professionally vulnerable scientists—could remain anonymous if they wanted. One of them was a professor I had in undergrad who is now the director of graduate studies in my current department. It's also so wonderful to be a member of a department that takes a stand on these things. Yesterday, everyone in my department (faculty and grad students) received an email from him calling bullshiitake on Geoff Marcy's nopology, calling Berkeley out for letting him off with a slap on the wrist, and providing us with a letter of support for the victims that we could sign (along with some other details that show they have taken what direct action they could against him).

As horrible as the situation is, I'm glad to be surrounded by people who aren't afraid to publicly take a stand against sexual harassment in our community.

zwingtip, that's an incredible response from your dept. and director. (what a bullshiitake response from Berkeley.)

Re: period tracking apps - don't read the comments! You wouldn't expect there to be backlash, but there are people complaining why do we need an app for everything, back in my day I wrote it on the calendar, blah blah blah. What a buzzkill!

I am so grateful the PPK taught me to never, ever, under any circumstances read the comments.
ps. Commenters: Crawl out from under your rocks and greet the future!

Plus, these commenters are just WRONG! With the app, I get to make an entry as soon as my period comes - I don't have to wait to get home to write it on the calendar. I can see months of data on one screen instead of flipping around to each month of the calendar, and I don't have to do any counting. It's much easier to detect patterns with the app.
