Basically, in 40 years, there will not be enough water to feed everyone a diet based on animal proteins. There will be just enough to feed everyone a plant-based diet.

This is plausible. It reminds me of when we all went vegetarian during the Haitian food crisis.

Wasn't there a global food crisis in the 1970s? I think that had a part in inspiring the book, Diet For A Small Planet. The number of vegetarians may have grown in the last 40 years but I seriously doubt that a majority of people will turn vegetarian or vegan over the next few decades. It would be great if this happened, but it seems like wishful and doomsday type thinking.

Yeah! And those soybeans used for you GMO tofu probably had to be flown around the globe a dozen times before it made it to your plate!

Two dozen times, bisques. Thoroughly inspected by TSA officials each time.

There were around 4 billion humans in the '70's. In 2050, there should be 9 billion. I would think that would make a difference.

The SIWI report this is from is REALLY worth reading and I'm looking forward to the release of the book these numbers are based on: http://www.taylorandfrancis.com/books/details/9780415539692/

I have the feeling it will result in resource wars before people give up their luxuries. Bring up the problem of limited resources, someone will yell "Malthusian!", and assume to have won the argument.

Well, yeah, any number of outcomes is possible. While the resource estimates are based on physical facts, humanity's response depends us. While the numbers say the earth won't be able to sustain a human diet with more than 5% of calories coming from animal products on average, that doesn't mean the most affluent people won't go right on eating what they eat now while the rest of the world starves to death. That's really what's happening already....
