269 campaign page: http://www.269life.com/Today there is an event in my city (and I believe around the world) where activists are getting the number 269 tattooed onto them as part of a campaign to get people to go vegan. What I would like to know is: what do you think about this campaign? Would you get a 269 tattoo? Do you think it's effective? Answers on a postcard please!

I don't see how this would be effective?
Honestly, this was the type of stuff that turned me off of vegetarianism for many years, let alone veganism.

I can see what it means from the webpage, but unless you tattoo the web address under the number, nobody is going to know or care about its meaning.

I think that if it has meaning for YOU as an animal rights activist or what-have you that's great, but I don't see how that tattoo would ever convince anyone else to go vegan.

Hm. Yeah, Israelis invoking the holocaust and getting numbers tattooed on them? Eek indeed.

I was thinking maybe 269 is the estimated # of lives saved per year by not eating animals or something, which seems like a decent vegan tattoo idea, and if anyone asked, you could tell them. But this.... er... I don't think so. It's not going to convert anyone to veganism I dont think, if that's the theory.

About as effective as a bumper sticker.....so basically not at all but it probably makes the person that decided to put it there feel good.

No. Just no.
(And as the child of a Holocaust survivor, the idea of purposefully tattooing a number on your arm just makes me feel kind of queasy.)

I've read about the 269 campaign before and read interviews with members. I feel like it's forking ridiculous to be honest. I mean unless your goal is to look pretty crazy and deter people away from veganism and animal rights.

I went to a vegan meet-up thing a wee while ago here and there was a German girl going on and on about people signing up for it and going to the Edinburgh thing. Yeah... no. Not for me. The holocaust comparisons? Absolutely not. The number thing in and of itself? Don't really get it. And just generally... naw.

The Vegan Police posted a good article regarding the 269 campaign: http://theveganpolice.com/main/?p=1712

Pretty sure they're all going to regret that in a few years. Or a few months. Or days.

I wear a necklace with a small metal disk stamped with 269. For myself, to remind me why I went vegan in the first place. Often when people are talking at me about why I should not be vegan it gives me some comfort.
I believe the original idea was that 269 (the group) was doing branding on themselves in public places to get attention to their cause. If they feel that strongly about it, more power to them.

Mr. Shankly wrote: The Vegan Police posted a good article regarding the 269 campaign: http://theveganpolice.com/main/?p=1712Thanks for that :) When I first heard about it, I felt quite uncomfortable about it (especially tattooing/branding yourself for life) but couldn't really explain why, so this really helps.

My only veg friend got a 269 tattoo. I do think the public showings are pretty extreme and I wouldn't want to be a part of one, but I do think they're an interesting way to draw attention that's not just standing around with pictures of bloody animals.

(ETA: Never mind, that gif was really big and distracting. Just imagine the no cat.) Yeah, this looks like it would be a turn-off for anyone who did know the source, and completely incomprehensible otherwise. Is the hope that someone will ask about the tattoo so they can, I don't know, hand out a business card?

But you're not, if very few people know what it means. I'm not a fan though: the stuff comparing animal slaughter and torture to slavery, the holocaust and abortion is forked up and inaccurate for a variety of reasons. Can't animal suffering stand on its own, without the comparison? Isn't it anthropocentric to always need the human comparison? The whole thing about not getting involved with human rights struggles is short sighted and childish. Sasha's political analysts (at least what I've read) is over simplistic, illogical, and reads as if it had been made by a 14 year old learning about exastenialism for the first time and bemoaning how miserable/ misunderstood he is. There I said it. Sorry.

You mean you can't do that by just doing that? I mean, I'm vegan and 269 still perplexes me. You think the average person will understand or even care? And calling it an animal holocaust is wrong on so many levels.

I see that now, but I still don't get the connection between 269 and Bollywood asparagi?
Now I'm confused.
I need another cup of coffee.

A spammer talking about the animal holocaust, what is this world coming to?
(although I guess they probably googled, picked out a random line)

I'm going to get the name "george" branded onto my arm to commemorate the spammer who was culled before his spamlife even began.
