Everything I've read says that they can't x-ray the inside of your body, so don't worry - your menstruation is safe. For now.

They could see a menstrual pad, though. And maybe a tampon string.

They could also see adult diapers, colostomy bags, and any number of other things that you don't necessarily want strangers to know about.

I've never been so happy about not being able to afford to fly anywhere. I can't decide what would make me cry harder, a stranger staring at me naked or a stranger feeling me up. If I were made to choose, i'd leave the airport and go to the nearest Greyhound station.

The best part is if you opt out of both, you most likely would not be allowed to leave without a police escort.

Yeah this specifically is the part that makes me uneasy. Well, one of the parts.

This is all I've been thinking as I read through this thread. X-raying my carry-on bag is one thing, my fun bags are another. Even if it actually stopped terrorists (which it doesn't seem like it does or will do at all), giving people a virtual strip search without cause seems pretty extreme.

Not only that, but you could face a civil suit from the TSA and a fine of up to $10,000 for impeding the security process. I don't understand how not getting on th eplace is jeopardizing anyone's security. The TSA keeps repeating that flying is a privilege, and that we give up privacy rights when we choose to buy our tickets--well, if flying is a privilege and not a requirement, how on earth is it allowable that they bring suit against those who choose not to take this "privilege"?

I would like to posit that the most effective form of protest for these scanners may be if everyone wore dirty diapers for the screenings...

i was thinking how 'bout the ladies who opt out wear a nice bulky pad! (who cares if you're not leaking yet, if they can tell it's dry, just say you're about to start at any minute now, and you want to be prepared.) that way, at least your labia are protected from direct fondling.

what i want to know is, though, do the fondlers have to change their gloves between passengers? i'd feel gross being violated after someone with a nasty STD was fondled. (yet another reason to wear a bulky pad.)

What if they think your bulky pad is a bomb?

Wait. Did I read this article correctly? They put their hands inside your underwear and pat you down inside of it?

If I could catch an STD from pants crotch to third party to pants crotch contact, I think airport security would drop down about 30 spots on my list of things I lose sleep over.

Not everyone wears pants, though. I'm already thinking no more dresses or skirts for flying.

They don't put their hands down your underwear--they feel around behind your waistband, but their hands are still outside your clothes when they fondle your crotch.



I'm intentionally wearing a skirt on Wednesday, perhaps with a diaper underneath.

While we're on the topic of catching nasties at the airport, does no one else get weirded out that everyone is walking around barefoot? How is there not an athletes' foot and toe fungus epidemic among flight attendants?

This totally makes me sqeamish, like in dressing rooms. I make a point of flying with pull on sneakers so I can wait until the very last minute to take them off and I'm wearing socks. It also makes getting re-shoed easy.

I fight this by being the one with athlete's foot.

you could also have an extra pair of socks in your bag that you switch out once you go to put your shoes back on.

I'm just going to carry a bottle of Lysol and spray a path in the direction I'm headed. I'll also insist on spraying the fondler's gloves.

Well, I'm glad for this small thing. I'm opting out and I am taking the cancer ray opt out letter with me and showing to the people around me at the airport on the 24th.
