I think in one of the interviews with the sailor's wife (fiancé at the time), she said that Greta wasn't the first woman he tried this on. After the news got out that the war was over, he tried to kiss a couple women before he got to her.

Sweet jesus, I don't want to take anything away from what Greta went through, but I feel bad for his poor wife! How do you live with someone whose claim to fame is this sort of behavior? And they were on a date, and she was perfectly fine with him running off and kissing whatever that moves and is in a nurse uniform? I just don't get it...

I am so glad you posted this. The photo always gave me a weird vibe--I never found it as iconic or endearing as everyone else seemed to, but never could articulate exactly why.

Hmm. I remember reading a short article about this photo long ago that said it was staged and not "impulsive". That the sailor and nurse didn't know each other but that they were asked to kiss for the camera.

I never ever thought anything of this photo either beyond having been told it was a sailor returning to his wife/girlfriend.

Now though... creepy.

if you look at those four pictures, try to imagine how much time must have passed from the first to the last? Enough time at least that a crowd was gathering... poor girl.
