Rick Santorum's spurious theory that ratification of the U.N. Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities would be tantamount to a U.N. takeover of parenting has led him to bravely oppose a treaty that would extend American values worldwide and guarantee disabled people equal treatment, and freedom from torture and exploitation. Santorum justified his opposition by saying that other countries wouldn’t actually enforce the provisions. “It does not provide any moral leadership,” he said. Quote: President-unelect Rick Santorum made his triumphant return to the Capitol on Monday afternoon and took up a brave new cause: He is opposing disabled people.
Specifically, Santorum, joined by Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah), declared his wish that the Senate reject the U.N. Convention on the Rights of Persons With Disabilities — a human rights treaty negotiated during George W. Bush’s administration and ratified by 126 nations, including China, Russia, Iran, Cuba, Syria and Saudi Arabia.
The former presidential candidate pronounced his “grave concerns” about the treaty, which forbids discrimination against people with AIDS, who are blind, who use wheelchairs and the like. “This is a direct assault on us,” he declared at a news conference.”

He is very fortunate that he doesn't have anybody in his family with disabilities and therefore just can't relate to these issues.

Didn't he tastefully (not!) trot his disabled daughter out on the senate floor or something while he gave his speech about this? I distinctly remember seeing him talk about this U.N. thing on TV, and his wife was standing next to him holding his daughter (conveniently placed to be almost always on camera). It was so obnoxiously exploitative I wanted to hurl.

And this was after Bob Dole -- disabled war veteran, Greatest Generation, Republican senator for decades, respected Republican elder -- came to the floor, looking rather elderly and feeble in a wheelchair, to encourage people to support it. And this treaty doesn't actually force anybody to do anything. Essentially, it says that other countries should have laws similar to the Americans With Disabilities Act. It was largely written by Americans. It's a "Yay America! Rest of the world, be as awesome as us!" bill. (And from what I've seen of other countries I've traveled to, most of the rest of the world is way behind us in terms of physical access, though a large part of that is because lots of other places have tons of centuries-old buildings that are a lot more difficult to retrofit with ramps and elevators. But there's really no excuse for a developed country to not have curb cuts in major cities.)
