She sounds like my mom with the "you can eat the bun" business. I can say it made me a good cook at 11, since I probably would have become the malnourished child like she figured would happen if I just ate her bread and iceburg salad type side dishes when going vegetarian.

I can say this is a reminder to bring a dish to eat and share when invited to someone like her's house, even if they do not seem appreciative or kind. Then when you have some lovely thing made, but the ricotta is made from tofu and some omnis refuse a bite, you can lay into them about how rude it is to be picky!
