I wouldn't hold my breath for employee opinions that aren't totally and completely biased by the fact that no one wants to lose their job...

Considering what vegans are already limited to when grocery hopping, especially those that are worried about things like BPA, I don't blame them if they decide to still support a company like Eden. Sometimes we have to pick our battles.

I broke the "don't read the comments" rule and read some wall posts on their page. I feel sick and angry. So many of the religious right behaving as though they have been victimized and marginalized by the concept of women having reproductive freedom. What really outrages me is the comments saying that if women want birth control they can pay $5 a month for a pack of it. I qualified for discounted birth control via Planned Parenthood because I'm low income and don't have health insurance but it still works out to be about $15/month. Without Planned Parenthood, I could be paying up to $40 a month. That's a hardship for a lot of working women. This new flock of Eden supporters is acting like every bag of quinoa they buy is a vote for Jesus and unborn children.

Just a heads up if it applies to your kind of birth control - Target and Walmart pharmacies sell tri-sprintec and sprintec for $9 even if you don't have insurance

Wow, that's great to know, Fee! I was pricing Yaz when I was quoted the $40-$50 range. Though I'm taking Ortho-cept from Planned Parenthood now anyway. But I'll definitely remember that- yay for Target!

My umeboshi paste came in a funky little squat plastic jar from Mitsuwa. It was near the refrigerated pickle section. I don't know if it's exactly the same thing, but it's...umeboshi, and it's a paste. And that's good enough for me. I'm not sure some random japanese company would have an opinion about birth control. Distributed by Niitakaya USA, I just looked, the rest of the brand is in Japanese.

i recognize the username, i think this is legit. (i've been interacting with someone with this exact same username over on livejournal since 2006, so unless there's an eden rep that either ganked nepenthes' username from elsewhere, or nepenthes is a shill, then i think it's a legit personal opinion. nothing wrong with a different opinion from a long-time vegan joining in.)

I'm not an eden rep/shill ~ but I can see why my post looked suspicious ~
I didn't know anything about the CEO until this issue & it's created a pretty lousy first impression - Perhaps my view is a bit selfish in that my love of tasty soymilk outweighs my dissatisfaction with their political views on paying for birth control or viagra.

my pantry does look like a bit of an Eden shrine

I sent a little message to Eden via their website just now:

Quote:
Hi There,

Just wanted to let you know that being a woman isn't a "lifestyle" and that contraceptives aren't "lifestyle drugs." I'm glad to hear you allegedly support a woman's right to choose, even if you don't back it up through your actions. This woman will be choosing to no longer buy Eden products.

Have a great day!

From the most recent Salon article:

Michael Potter wrote:
Eden Foods being characterized as any type of impediment to people’s access to all of the above is ludicrous on the face of it. This stuff, it’s all available. It’s all free according to the HHS mandate.

So it isn't a problem that he's fighting the birth control mandate, because birth control is free, according to the birth control mandate. Which he's fighting.

HUH.

Is he married? does he tell his wife not to use his money to pay for birth control? Or do they not have these problems because white bread made her sterile?

The whole "I support a women's access to birth control but will not make that access a reality by aiding in making it affordable" thing is utterly ridiculous. Unless he pays his employees so much that forking up $40 or more a month for a pack of pills is peanuts, but even still, I don't like Eden foods anymore.

I didn't really care about this because there isn't that many Eden products sold here and they're way too expensive, but I have a party tonight and I just *had* to have a can of navy beans, and the only kind were the organic kind, and I get home and realize its Eden >.<

I feel like I need to go out and buy Plan B with my God given union given insurance to make up for it.

But seriously, I don't understand how this is an issue at all. I don't like holding Canada up as a liberal utopia but as long as I've been working, my insurance through various jobs always covered birth control.

The comment replies under yours are the best advertisement for contraception that I have seen.

No way, that's the same Eden? I thought they just did soymilk. This is bad news for me, because the only navy and adzuki beans I can find are Eden brand. Ugh.

A lot of us wouldn't be vegan to begin with if we thought like that. No offense meant.

What does company policy about (animal tested) contraceptives have to do with veganism?

We do have to choose our battle or every damn purchase becomes fraught with peril. The WF CEO has said some pretty assholish things about health care. We also don't know the company positions in a lot of cases. (and I don't bother to find out if I like every company I buy groceries from)

I'll cook my aduki beans from dry now, but this isn't like eating a chicken sandwich.

Yeah I'm not rushing out to buy Eden foods products and I'll probably choose alternatives if I can, but I really think health care availability should not be based on what services people or their spouses perform for money.

I don't buy organic for the most part, and lots of people would have something to say to me about buying a product that uses pesticides or harms the environment. I'm doing the best I can with what I buy and try to make informed decisions, but if I want to be considerate of animal rights, human rights, environmental problems and everything else, that pretty much leaves me only eating food and using items I make myself. So, I pick my battles.

I get what you're saying. But pretty much every purchase made lines the pockets of someone doing something unethical somewhere.

Totally agree with all this, even down to the wanting to cook my adzuki beans from dry. Actually even before this news broke I was looking for dried adzuki beans because Eden's are pretty expensive, but I haven't found em yet.
