i think under the affordable care act, coverage for contraception is mandatory. that's what eden is suing about. but from the Salon article, it seems like they used to be able to exclude it because of the drug category it fell under.

I had this made-up idea that Eden Foods were the best company ever, because I've always liked their products and they seemed like a quiet company in terms of marketing that just focussed on quality products. Now I'm pissed.

I've always been wary of them. Hell, their name is Eden Foods and they're got the words "creation" and "purity" in their slogan. Can't say I'm very surprised.

I've been totally distraught about this. It's hard enough to find Mirin etc that doesn't have weird additives and canned food without bpa and now I have yet another company to boycott :/ I love, love, love their sorghum baked beans too. I wish business owners would just get with the times and let women decide when and if to be pregnant and let consumers decide if they want to eat gmo crapola... But, I guess that lies, deceit, and oppression are more ethical Christian values than trust and honesty.

I have realized lately that I really need to pay more attention to a company's name.

Let's completely forget the fact that not all birth control for women is hormonal...

I usually don't pay too much attention to what is written on the packaging of products but this reminds me of the one time I decided to read my bottle of Dr. Bronners and I was just like, "dafuq did I just read?"

But Jesus hates condoms! Plus I read in a review of the book Infant Homicides through contraceptives (capitalization theirs) that if you have an IUD you have .8 abortions/year.

That is fantastic. I would like to know how, precisely, you have .8 of an abortion.

I'm so bummed about this. We only buy their beans because of the bpa. I do often cook from dry in my crockpot, but there are lots of times I need a quick meal and the can of beans in the cabinet fits the bill. Now I don't know what I'm going to do.

I actually agree with them on this. I don't think that health coverage should be tied to employment. I can only assume that if they're fighting this, they're advocating a single payer public health service.

I would not assume that. I would, however, assume that if tax payer money were used to pay for universal coverage, they would possibly be upset about contraception being covered there too. Lots of groups morally opposed to things like birth control and sex education fight any use of tax dollars to support those things.

I haven't heard any of the companies or religious groups upset about contraception coverage say that this issue should be handled by the government or anybody as long as employers don't have to deal with it. Besides, they don't think women should have access to birth control, no matter who pays, because they view it as immoral, so they will keep on with personhood legislation that seeks to limit options, and keep trying to make it harder to get access.

Yes, this. I've always been kind of weirded out by their labels, and they haven't compelled me to buy them. Granted, it's mostly the cost, and only partially the label...if I'm going to pay excessive amounts of money for stuff I don't want religious overtones on my packaging. Of course I still buy Dr. Bronner's, but I'm just amused at how they don't ever change the font, they just squeeze more inane ramblings onto the label for larger sizes. Point is, I'm kind of a hypocrite.

Um, anyway, I'm pretty annoyed at the whole fighting contraception for employees. Hell, even with the evil judgmental stuff aside, a lot of women take it for reasons other than to avoid getting knocked up. I consider not getting pregnant a pleasant side effect of my BC pill.

They can't bar coverage of the pill for a medical condition. From my understanding, the basis of these cases are a class of drugs considered "lifestyle drugs." This also includes Viagra. So if they win and dont have to cover contraception for the purpose of birth control, they would still have to cover it if prescribed for a medical condition. I have no idea what would happen if a women can't get pregnant for a medical reason and is therefore prescribed contraception.

I just can't really even comprehend having these discussions in 2013. It's pretty much insanity.

I see this less as a case about whether bc should be legally covered and more about privacy. As in, not only do I deserve my birth control but I deserve my damn medical privacy.

What are the privacy issues? The only difference would be the dollar amount paid at the pharmacy.

The privacy issue is that my employer's misogyny, er, religion should have no bearing on my medical care and they should not have any knowledge whatsoever if I am taking Plan B every forking day while snorting viagra.*

*Don't snort viagra, kids.

P.S. fun fact: in the US the right to legal abortion is predicated on the right to privacy--it honestly doesn't make a huge amount of sense and is easily overruled the second fetal personhood is decided, whereas in Canada the right to legal abortion is predicated on the right to security of the person--even if fetal personhood were ever decided (unlikely) there would still be a strong case that the woman's (or whatever gender) right to security of the person overrides a hanger on's right to not be evicted. (Tangentially related, obviously.)
