Organic Eden Foods’ quiet right-wing agenda
"A crunchy, natural food company marketed to liberals discreetly sues to stop covering employees' contraception "

We had a post about this a week or 2 ago. Where is that post? I have no clue. I wrote angry comments on their FB page though.

Good for you. Seriously.

I think companies ( there are a number of them ) that are suing the government to get out of paying for healtcare coverage of contraception have the wrong mentality.

What their employees do with their healthcare coverage is none of the corporation's business, just like it isn't any of the corporation's business what their employees do with the paycheck.

Well this is the problem we have when companies are left to choose the healthcare coverage for their employees. I don't want the CEO of my company saying "well mammograms? they aren't that important who needs them, let's cut costs by eliminating them". Although in the end, whether it is true universal coverage or a mix, someone is making choices about coverage but at least I hope they do it in an informed way by the guidance of scientific studies and doctors.

Hi! I think I posted the original info in "things that don't go with any other topic". I'm super pleased this is getting more attention.

Here's the statement they posted on my original Facebook post:

Quote:
Michael Potter and Eden Foods have offered a challenge to regulations of the “Affordable Care Act” that forces individuals to violate their religious beliefs by funding contraception, sterilization, abortion, and abortifacients, as well as counseling for individuals that encourages them.

Thomas Jefferson, a Founding Father, principal author of the Declaration of Independence, and our third president, when describing the construct of our Constitution proclaimed, “No provision in our Constitution ought to be dearer to man than that which protects the rights of conscience against the enterprises of civil authority.”

The HHS Mandate violates the free exercise of religion and freedom of speech under the First Amendment to the United States Constitution, the Religious Freedom Act, the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, and the Administrative Procedure Act.

We are bringing this action to vindicate not only our own
rights, but also to protect the rights of all Americans who care about our Constitutional guarantees of free exercise of religion and their freedom of speech.

Full complaint is here: http://www.thomasmore.org/sites/default ... 032013.pdf

In my humble opinion religious freedom should only be about the choices an individual makes for his/her own life.

i'm filling my hip flask with lilithsoy. 100% non-gmo organic soybeans that have been banished to the desert for their immoral and unnatural practices.

I seriously hope there aren't any dirty little secrets at Pedosoy. Like they cheat on their taxes or the CEO is against gay marriage or whatever.

This peas me off because I really like their products, and would actually spend the extra $ on their BPA-free cans.

Yeah remember in the good old days when we used natural methods like nutmeg and rue.

This is so annoying and disappointing. I rely on their brands for so many things: ume plums/paste/vinegar, sauerkraut, noodles, mustard, etc. A lot of that I can find replacement brands for, but the ume plum stuff will be tricky (the stuff at the Asian market has too much weird stuff in it).

WHY??!

I guess I'll have to enjoy the saving money part. I have been buying dried beans for a while cause they come out better, and are cheaper but sometimes I want to be lazy and then I would get a can of Eden beans. I feel their chickpeas where superior to every other canned chickpea I ever had. DAMN YOU EDEN FOODS!
I never go to trader joes, it's always a mob-scene here and I can't shop like that.

Man I feel like writing the owner a nasty letter. I don't have facebook, so I can't leave them a comment.

Anyone talking about boycotting Eden products should be writing emails or letters to the company. Let them know why you are choosing to no longer buy their products.

I'd switch to Trader Joe's store brand, but I recently learned that Jobediah "Trader Joe" McGinnis originally made his fortune in the slave trade.

Nooch (Denver vegan grocery) posted on their facebook page that they will no longer be carrying Eden Foods in their store.

Also they're having 10% off on Teese and Daiya today for Grilled Cheese Sandwich day but that is not topical to this thread. :)

I don't really understand how insurance of contraception coverage works. Do employers pay extra for it? Do some try to find plans that don't cover it because they just don't want employees using it?

Insurance companies are highly unlikely to give much of a discount for just not covering contraception. I imagine a company would need to be quite large for them to have that sort of leverage to negotiate such individualized plans. Walmart could probably do it, but Eden Foods or Hobby Lobby?

This is a great loophole for Christian Scientist owned businesses: they wouldn't have to offer any coverage at all. And mental health? Mormons aren't too keen on that! Blood transfusions? Organ transplants? Who needs those? The moral objection train will get pretty long.

Actually, it might raise rates. My school offers plans with and without maternity care coverage. You save $50/month or something going without, but if you get pregant, you are screwed. If insurance companies think no contraception plan will end in them paying out more in maternity care, they will take it into account. Bean counters, after all.
