Oh my! Yeah this would totally mess up a lot of people I know in the trans community. If I was a citizen it would probably mess me up too (I do have an updated DL but that's all). In fact it will be quite interesting to see in two years time what happens when I try to get citizenship, considering my permanent resident card has the ol F on it.

Hey, so, I'm curious to any English-resident people here... What's going down, down there? I know that legislation is going through an such regards equal marriage, but I did a brief google and found a bunch of shitty stuff and nary an awesome video to be found.

Looks like Costa Rica did a sneaky sneaky and made same-sex marriage (or maybe just civil unions for now) legal. Finally that works for good. (unlike the crepe they have been pulling in my state)

Indeed, no awesome videos. Clearly Scotland is the best!

The website for the Marriage (Same-Sex Couples) Bill can be found here, which shows the current position of the bill and has a timeline for its progress: http://services.parliament.uk/bills/201 ... sbill.html . It's still going through the House of Lords, with the next stage being the bill being examined line by line in the Lords on 8 July 2013.

I think the Coalition for Equal Marriage are one of the leaders behind the England and Wales equal marriage campaign (http://www.c4em.org.uk), which include groups such as Stonewall (http://www.stonewall.org.uk/marriage) but they don't seem to be half as together and 'out there' as in Scotland.

ETA: Oh, and the Freedom to Marry coalition too: http://www.freedomtomarry.org.uk/

This needs to be getting more attention. I hope that the upcoming Olympics starts to help people pay a lot more attention.

The Olympics are mostly commercialized bullshiitake these days anyway, but I've still never been in favor of boycotts until now.

Thanks for sharing this. Hopefully our LGBT friends in Russia are also physically defending themselves & each other when attacked.

I feel like a dick being that guy but the English gay marriage bill is actually a bit shiitake for trans people in that it's a purposeful step backwards for trans autonomy from a legal/medical standpoint. http://www.sarahlizzy.com/blog/?p=154 is a pretty coherent summary of the relevant issues.

Thank you zwingtip, that was really interesting. I had no idea. The Spousal Veto sounds like a terrible idea.

How convenient that the scum attacking the youth show their own faces online. The style of attack use d can easily be turned around. At the very least, folks can find out where they live, work, etc - then out them for their disgusting actions.

Been having a lot of conversations about What To Do About Russia, because obviously sitting here in my safe bubble doing nothing while they take steps backwards is not okay. I really like the idea of boycotting the Olympics. There's been a lot of talk about boycotting Russian vodka, and alternative suggestions to boycott Russian petroleum (Lukoil, mostly). I'm ambivalent. On the one hand, it's brought Stoli to publicly condemn the laws, and a lot more media attention and public discussion. On the other, exporting vodka isn't a main source of money, and the people it would affect probably wouldn't be in a position to do anything. I'm tired, and not writing this well, but I wanted to write it before I forgot it.

For the boycott: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/wayne-sel ... 59089.html

Against the boycott: http://ehahlilsnotebook.blogspot.com/20 ... rades.html

Certainly, the big international sponsors need to drop out. I hate the whole idea of boycotting an Olympics, but this is such a bad situation.

They need to move the Olympics. It is crazy that a host country is threatening the safety of gay competitors and tourists.. http://www.gaystarnews.com/article/russ ... ames300713

Johnny Weir was speaking out against the boycott and I wonder if this changes his position.

Ugh, yes. How to get this to happen though? I mean, wow. That's such a huge thing. Ugh but either moving it, or cancelling it outright is the only right thing I feel like.

There was a time when I felt that way, but I no longer do. The Olympic machine needs a total overhaul anyway.

I can't imagine the Olympics would be moved or cancelled. Too much money and politics involved. And given the choice between personal desire and doing a Right Thing for someone else, most people choose the personal desire.
