A brief summary on Salon.com of a study indicating that using sex to get attention for ethical causes does not gain supporters for those causes, it only gets attention. The study specifically analyzed the use and results of ad campaigns PETA used:

So now all PETA has to do is release all that proof they've been sitting on that their ad campaigns are effective and save animals.

I know, I know. Good one, right?

Renata Bongiorno, the lead researcher on both studies, says, ”There’s a negative link between dehumanization and the treatment of others, it reduces concern … If you are using images that are dehumanizing, it’s likely to backfire.”

::brain asplode:: I would insert the Scanners gif here (you know the one), but that's probably too gross for some people.

Why do we assume their goal isn't to get attention?

Annak, I've always believed that PETA is looking to get more attention and financial support rather than make change, but in my experience a lot of people I've met seem to believe that their strategy is effective in promoting animal rights as well as getting attention (usually along the lines of, "Well, they wouldn't do it if it wasn't effective, would they?")

I know people who participated in some of the sexist campaigns because they sincerely believe they are helping animals.
