As far game show skits with unfunny premises on SNL go, I will concede that it was pretty good. And the new person's impersonation of Sarah Silverman was spot-on.

Day Bow Bow was still way better, though. Like Louie CK said, man, those digital shorts are really great. Maybe...maybe you should do that instead of a live sketch comedy show.

The 2016 election, urrybody.

Shirtless Putin made that sketch.

If you look at how many candidates the Greens and the Libertarians are running this year, there is no doubt that they are both sideshows, looking for attention every 4 years. The Libertarians run more candidates than the Greens do, to their credit. Given how little attention is paid to local, state, and off year elections, it is possible that a third party candidate could win at a lower level of government. Then you build upon that. It takes time and work and you don't get the huge national press coverage, however.

A progressive Democrat party is created by electing progressives at the lower levels of government and doing the work there. That means voting every time there is an election and actually joining the party in states with closed primaries.

I missed the beginning of SNL and so missed Alec's Trump impersonation. Was looking forward to it. That youtube vid doesn't work in my country (Canada) so I'll find it elsewhere, I'm sure. Next (real) debate Sunday! (I think)

The green party and libertarian party has candidates for all our local elections. Not that I know about voting their stances and such but they are there.

Third parties have a historical role in the US that is often overlooked: they exist in large part to force an issue by threatening the hegemony of one or both parties. The Populists never had much electoral success, but they were successful in getting the Democrats to adopt most of the items on their plank (many of which were subsequently implemented). More recently, Ross Perot successfully forced Clinton's hand with respect to the federal debt. A significant part of their role is to do what Democrats and Republicans hate them for: acting as spoilers. I'm sure neither Stein nor Johnson is so deluded that think they can actually win, despite what they say at their rallies.

That having been said, I don't see that any of the third parties is offering much from that perspective this time around, and this election is too high stakes to be spoiled. I just don't buy this idea that third parties have no business participating in presidential elections.

I am only suggesting that by running 500ish candidates nationally (Libertarians) and 100ish candidates nationally (Greens) they are not actually working on a real alternative which is the line I hear from many people.

I had to turn it off and watch The Simpsons.

Are they still interrupting each other and ignoring the moderator?

Also -- do not believe Mike Pence. Indiana hates his guts.

Moderator: What about the candidates' relationship with the military?

Tim Kaine: Trump is weak on the military for the following four reasons: 1) (First reason), 2) (Second reason), 3) (Third reason), and 4) (Fourth reason).

Mike Pence: What a nerd! Did you memorize that answer, nerd?

And neither VP presidential candidate mentioned the most pressing issue facing the American people today: Rosie O'Donnell.

But one of them did mention "partial-birth abortion"!

I had no idea how happy I was about not hearing that during this election until I wasn't happy anymore.

Pence is a truly terrifying man. He signed a bill that would have mandated that fetal tissue be cremated or buried. He led the fight to defund Planned Parenthood. Pence is completely against any form of legal recognition or rights for the LGBT community.

A five minute walk through Google on the rest of his record will show you that he needs to be kept far from the White House.

I don't understand this "evangelical Catholic" thing that has been popping up in recent years. Does it mean they are more Catholic than the pope?

Given that the current pope is a raging progressive by the yardstick of Catholic popes, they must not like him much.

I think Pence is the scariest one on the Trump/Pence ticket. Trump actually does have humane positions on some issues.

But... if one of them is to have the nuclear codes, would you rather it was Trump?

Pence, I'm not worried about having nuclear codes. He isn't that kind of batshit. I'm worried about him being anywhere near the Supreme Court nomination process.

Trump, I could see bombing North Korea or pissing off Putin.

Just one of many reasons why Trump is every bit as scary as Pence, IMO.

Pence is a liar, but Trump is a bullshitter, so I still think Trump is worse.

Remember when we thought John McCain was a maverick?

Trump is a total maverick. That's why I think he's more dangerous to humanity and our immediate survival.

That said, I think the way he's gotten the GOP blessing is by promising that (as he promised Kasich) his VP will have most of the power (ala Cheney perhaps). So a Trump presidency is likely to be a Pence presidency and a Pence agenda of blocking PP, abortion and contraception and thinning the separation between Church and state till you can see through it.

I'm sure he or his sons did promise that, but Trump has broken more than his share of promises in his life, so I'm not feeling clear on who the hell will be running the country if he gets elected.
