Did anyone see this in the Guardian? http://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle ... s-bloggers

A lot of UK papers are reporting on veganism in general at the moment since a poll just revealed the (estimated) number of vegans in Great Britain.

I wrote a response here: https://spiceboxofearth.co.uk/2016/05/1 ... of-vegans/

I only had time to skim both, but wow. Gross. I will definitely take a longer, closer look when I can (and try to keep from barfing).

Toxic masculinity, just what a movement based on compassion and community needs.

Yeh, it might make you barf :/ But hopefully my response will give you some larfs though.

Haaaaaaaaaa I didn't mean to make those rhyme but yeh. A larf-barf is the best kind.

and what do committed ‘real’ vegans make of the newcomers?

Awesome, right off the bat (this is from the subheader) let's pit vegans against each other.

Quote:
“I was one of the people who, when somebody talked about veganism, would start making bacon jokes,” he says, when I speak to the brothers over Skype. “That was me.”

Sounds to me like he's still that person at heart, he just bullies people in a different way now.

I loved your response, as well. I will have a hard time getting the image of being hosed down by cold lentil soup out of my mind, ha!

Whenever I see crepe like this, I just think of Audre Lorde: The master's tools will never dismantle the master's house. All these "Bros" have done is take the same, tired old script on masculinity and done a Ctrl+F to replace "bacon" with "tofu." They say they're reaching a broader audience that way, but let's be honest, is that the kind of audience veganism really needs? Don't get me wrong, the more vegans the better- but how exactly is one building a long-term ethical lifestyle if one doesn't examine the very roots of compassion, moral thinking, or the very concept that one type/class/category/expression of living and being is inherently superior or inferior to another? Simply said, one doesn't. Instead of changing veganism to keep these rutting frat boys comfortably ensconced in their scripted gender roles, let's change the bullshiitake dominant paradigm/attitudes that has allowed unchecked aggression to perpetrate things like factory farming in the first place. Veganism is for everybody, male/female/both/neither/other, skinny/fat/lazy/athletic, black/brown/white, rich/poor/middle class, animals AND humans. There's a difference between reaching a specific audience and stepping on someone else to lift yourself up, and these bros are definitely doing the latter.

I was going to say, isn't this a trend piece that resurfaces every few years?

Brogans vs. hegans! Just to save time, here are some other one-point-makes-a-line trend stories for lifestyle journalists to mine:

Goregans - Politicians who go vegan for like a week
Chimchimchereegans - Vegan chimney sweeps with horrible fake accents
New Vegantics - I dunno, something about ruff shirts and hummus. Durian Durian? No, you suck.
Meatmeagans - Former vegans who are vegan

YES. I mean your whole comment was on point but yes. You should've written a response instead of me :D

I was probably being naive but I expected a little bit more from this newspaper in particular. I expect this guff from The Daily Mail, The Sun and that ilk...... But what sort of people is this rhetoric appealing to and who is it excluding? Ughhhhhh. Just......a whole barrel of no.

I really need to steal all these great comments and append them to my post :D

I choose chimchimchereeganism 100%.

Yeah, using the word Bro immediately turns me off. Theirs is the very specific form of masculinity that I find difficult to deal with as it's the same as the boys I found attractive at school who would also call me a "forking queer" and spit on me. That whole performance of masculinity (which I now see as a hyper-masculine drag) makes me feel ill.

Mat.

Although the Vegan Bros are trying to reach a certain demographic, I figured they called themselves Bros because they are brothers.

Gheegans (vegans who eat ghee)
Ve-gones (ex-vegans)
Megans (vegans who are named Megan/Meghan)
Squeegans (vegans who eat cute animals)
Briegans (vegans who eat brie and/or Brie Larson)
Regans (former-ex-vegans)

Until they're faced with peer pressure from some Cool New Friends and claim they feel weak and have to eat meat again even though they've previously completed three centuries as a vegan cyclist and pre-emptively dump all their vegan friends so they don't have to explain to them or possibly answer some tough questions.

Oh wait, sorry, that's just the Megan I knew. Carry on!

That was a good write-up, Jenny, although I'll confess that I haven't read the original article (I'm in an anti-rage phase, and I think it might set me off.) I did download the Vegaphobia article for later, though.

I'm a Megan! And a little sad I can't make "Megan the Vegan" rhyme without horribly mispronouncing one of those nouns.

And I am too hardcore to cave to peer pressure. Friends? My only friends are the animals.

I think the mispronunciation of "vegan" is permitted to rhyme in this situation, since, as I'm sure you're aware, the vegan band Propagandhi already made it popular a couple decades ago:
