Vegans exclude flesh, fish, fowl, dairy products (animal milk, butter, cheese, yogurt, etc.), eggs, honey, animal gelatin, and all other foods of animal origin.

ie the 'vegan diet'.

No one is saying the other elements of veganism are any less important but they are not considered part of our 'diet'.

I don't think that's what they thought you meant when they wrote

So if a person wears a fur coat, leather boots, silk scarf, animal tested make up (if they are female), smokes but doesn't eat animal products they would be "vegan"??

No. They would eat a vegan diet.

obviously, they wouldn't be vegan. BUT, if that same person didn't eat any animal products it seems reasonable to say they eat a vegan diet.

But the article refers to the fact that vegans don't wear leather, etc. It also talks about the vegan diet, as in what vegans eat. Did you read the article? It's ok to say "vegan diet." No one is saying it's vegan to wear fur. You're arguing something that no one is saying.

I'm picturing this person and it's making me laugh. A smoking man wearing make-up, a fur coat, leather boots and a silk scarf, while eating a Primal Strip or something. Actually, I might have just described Andre3000..

I am not arguing, I am make a point that veganism isn't a diet it is a lifestyle, I take issue with it being called a diet. The article should be called vegan lifestyle is going mainstream or something along those lines. I just don't want to see veganism as the next fadkins diet....

I don't think the Vegetarian Resource Group's survey has changed veg/vegan %s since I first saw their reported numbers 10+ years ago. Has anyone else seen any other studies with different numbers?

Back to the point before quibbles, the article was great, so thank you for posting it!

And I recently ate lunch at a new raw vegan restaurant where one of the other diners was wearing a full length fur coat. It definitely made me uncomfortable, but the restaurant needs business so I didn't comment.
