It sounds like the replacement will be in the UK only. I like that our local starbucks has nice big porcelain cups you can use, even if no one ever seems to except me and my friends.

They have some bone china here, too, in the mugs for sale at least.

I knew about bone china unfortunately. My grandmother explained it at the dinner table once. She was very proud of her wedgwood. I was horrified.

this is true pretty much everywhere, so it's tough to blame starbucks; the waste is industry-wide. in high school (pregan), my best friend and i used to hit two local donut shops three minutes before closing every saturday night, because if we bought six donut holes they would give us all the donut holes they had in the place that were going to be thrown out as soon as they closed. (please don't make fun of us for spending all of our saturdays this way; it was a very small town. our options were donut roundup or robotripping in the graveyard.)

more on topic, bone china is gross, and another of those "how the fork does someone even think of that?" things, like jell-o or imitation vanilla.

It's true that almost all companies waste things. Although out of every place I've worked, Starbucks threw out the most food.

I read an amazing New Yorker article about waste. Did you know that Americans throw away 40% of the edible food we produce (number 1 item thrown away uneaten: vegetables)? We fill our fridges and then let the food pass its expiration date and the throw out not just the food but also the energy spent keeping it cool. 25% of our freshwater is used to grow food that will be thrown out.

I remember Mumbles (when he was the Thrax) posted about restaurant waste in a thread on the old boards, so I gather restaurants are even worse than ordinary households, which is kind of mindblowing.

Do you have a link to that article?

sometime if you are in with the starbucks cognescenti they will let you lie across the counter and pour the beverage into your expectant mouth.

I got a tracheotomy so that they can just pour it right into my throat and I don't have to worry about burning my tongue.

How do you avoid burning your throat?

They distill a latte to a single drop for me and then put it on a tab with a little LSD. Best coffee experience ever.

Yeah, I do that sometimes, but I make sure that they add a foaming agent to the tab so I can get the experience of the foam at the top of a latte...it just happens in my mouth and people think I have rabies, but hey, do I look like I care?

Seems pretty stupid to me. Just drink out of the damn cups that you already have. Starbucks is such a wasteful company.

Seriously. Have you ever worked for Starbucks? If not, you would be completely shocked to find out how much of their baked goods (and everything else) are thrown out every night.

My sister got fired for giving perfectly good baked goods to homeless people, instead of throwing them in the dumpster.
Starbucks is awesome.
