This article explains a researcher's discovery that prairie dogs' alarm calls aren't just saying "danger!" They're more specific; the calls differentiate between species, size, color, and shape of the threat.

I didn't know before reading this article that prairie dogs are social talkers--they chat all day. What could they be saying?!

I saw a program on this where you got to see the team of researchers do various experiments like make a fake bird or something to fly about in view of the prairie dogs. It was cute. It makes me wonder how most people think about animal though, I mean I assumed creatures didn't just make noises for fun, even when I managed to justify to myself eating them.

I love prarie dogs! I used to live near a good sized field and would pass by it every day going home from work. And yes, colorado considers them a pest, especially the richer suburbs.

That's really cute. I want to learn to speak prairie dog. I'd host a prairie dog party. We could talk about American Idol while we sip tea.

Well, I think you could say, "Coyote! Big coyote! Snake! Coyote! Smaller coyote! Eagle!"

Stuff like that.

The only articles I can find are from 2007 so hopefully they are doing better but a couple years ago Highlands Ranch, CO decided to kill a few of their prarie dog colonies.

Oh and this came out of a community report from 2008
"2008 Site Designated Unsuitable Habitat for Prairie Dogs
Spring Gulch Natural Area, from Hyacinth Road to Stone Mountain Drive, has been
designated unsuitable habitat for prairie dogs. Prairie dogs in this area will be
completely removed and routinely monitored. Prairie dogs that relocate back in to
this area will be removed using any method, without public notification, as part of the
ongoing and routine management of this area."

And I was wrong, found a 2010 report. I guess every year they evaluate prarie dog locations that are 'suitable' and 'unsuitable' and remove prarie dogs by 'any means necessary without public disclosure'

More like "Triangular coyote dressed in blue!" That's really more words--and more profound--than what I say at work some days.
