http://www.vancouversun.com/news/sled+dogs+slaughtered+Whistler+when+tourism+slumped+Report/4196610/story.html

This is a terrible story coming out of British Columbia about the illegal "culling" of sled dogs by a dog sled company after tourism dipped off after the Olympics. The story is beyond terrible but hopefully it will shed some light on an industry most people see as charming and wholesome fun.

I have to go hug my dog now.

*warning: the article contains some graphic descriptions of animal cruelty and suffering*

I just read this on someone's facebook and I'm so freaking sickened. Granted, I couldn't make it all the way through, but did they explain why they couldn't try to adopt the dogs out or something?

I would suffer from PTSD, too, if I had to shoot 100 dogs. Doesn't excuse the behavior. The word "no" was available; he didn't have to do it.

according to the article, it wasn't that the guy was against killing dogs because he normally does it in a nice way. it was just that there were so many that he couldn't do it effectively or "humanely".

this reminds me of the dog racing industry. are there any groups that work to rescue and adopt out former sled dogs?

I live in BC and a few local media sources have reported that it is difficult to place them until they are older as they have extremely high energy. The amount of animal cruelty in BC lately is really really sickening.

This makes me sick, I couldn't make it through the article as the part about Suzie made me want to cry.
What peas me off more is that people are actually sympathizing with the piece of shiitake that killed them all! As far as I know, no one held a gun to his head, he did have a choice.

I was just about to post a link to NPR's coverage about this.

It totally breaks my heart.

Jorge Garcia (Hurley from Lost) mentioned this on his blog today, too.

Really awful.
