AN EGYPTIAN couple has named their baby girl 'Facebook' to honour the role the social network played in the revolution.

Facebook, which has close to 600 million users, led to the departure of long-time Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak.

Citing an article in Egyptian newspaper Al-Ahram, the technology blog TechCrunch reported that Jamal Ibrahim chose the name as a way to express his gratitude to the country's youth.

The girl's family, friends, and neighbours in the Ibrahimia region gathered around the newborn to show their continuing support for the internet-aided revolution, the paper said.

The social networking site played a crucial role in the Egyptian uprising, so much so that it has widely been labeled "the Facebook Revolution."

Demonstrators used Facebook to organise protests, share information, and connect with the outside world.

There are five million Facebook users in Egypt, TechCrunch reported, more than any other country in the Middle East and North Africa region.

Facebook has reported an increase in Egyptian users in the past month, with 32,000 Facebook groups and 14,000 pages created in the two weeks after January.

You know how sometimes people name their baby after where they met? That might be weird if you met online. There could be ten-year-olds walking around named Yahoo Chat Room.

People should imagine their kids as adolescents when they decide on a name.

Facebook isn't as good as the woman I read about who named her daughter L-a. ("La Dash A)

So I wonder if they're transliterating it into Arabic as well for the purpose of being a name... I mean, it'd be awkward otherwise what with the conflict between left-to-right and right-to-left reading...

My boyfriend, who took a semester of Arabic and also does a lot of research into language-y things and naming practices outside of school, says it's very likely that "Facebook" would be given as a first name which functions as a blessing, and the second name is the one the person goes by, for example "Mohammad Fatima Abbas Al-Qamar", where Fatima is the name the girl would be known by, Abbas is her father's name, and Al-Qamar is a family name or her grandfather's name. Lots of different variation. (Edit: boyfriend just read the article and says he's pretty convinced this is a "blessing name" situation; in all likelihood, anyway)

I hope Mr. Nummers' vasectomy never fails, or we'll have to name our kid Friendster. That would just be embarrassing.

It's less embarrassing than if you still have your friendster profiles.

I think it's awesome, and I'm guessing (or hoping) that there's some sort of multiple naming/transliterating thing going on so that it doesn't sound silly. It's really cool to be born in the middle of something so historic.

But I'm not going to name a child ok cupid.

By the time this girl is old enough to realize what facebook is/was, it won't be relevent anymore. Like MySpace, or AOL.

I'd argue AOL is asserting its relevancy right now, with such moves as acquiring HuffPo.

Jordan and SoS aren't having kids... in no small part because he'd name it "Paisley Snapdragon" or some bullshiitake.
