Let's derail poor person's thread again (bad Kitty I know I swear I'm sorry it's not animal related D: )

Those ADHD medication ads that make it look like you'll be magically popular, straight A student, and have parents that love you because you took your medication. Uhm, yea, because teenagers with issues REALLY need an encouragement to abuse ADHD meds. Those kinds of ads make it look like you're defective if you take a prescribed dose and aren't magically all of these things.

Those Cymbalta ads that say "Depression hurts. Cymbalta can help." More like "Depression hurts. Cymbalta hurts more!" I would not wish my experience getting off Cymbalta on anyone.

WOAH. what the fizzle. That's too forking much for me to handle. That may be in the top 5 infuriating ads. I challenge PPKers to find me something worse.

Has anyone else seen the 5-hour energy drink commercials that try to convince you that drinking coffee is inconvenient.

You have to put coffee in a drip coffee maker and press the on button! You have to wait in line while someone else makes your coffee! You have to add your own sugar! You have to hold a cup! You have to, yes, drink 6-ounces-or-so of coffee! The horror!

Then the guy puts his foot up on the kitchen table. Geez!

Yes! Those crack me up, especially the way he checks his watch and smugly sits down to read his newspaper. LOOK AT ALL THAT TIME YOU SAVED!

hahaha I just looked this one up and it's hilarious!! For anyone else that hasn't seen this gem yet: http://www.5hourenergy.com/commercials.asp

Those remind me of those commercials that make cooking pasta look hard. Who the hell closes their eyes and throws spaghetti in a pot as hard as they can?

There's another one that's about "a woman" or something but I can't find it.
This one too:

I love Top Gear even though I hate cars.

The best part is the incongruity of Dockers being extolled as a signifier of old school, he-man machismo. (Because, when I think of the word "manly," the first image that pops to mind is khaki trousers with a pleated front, for that trademark "generous fit.")

yes! I must buy some pleated khakis for my husband asap!
I'm hating the dominoes pizza commercial where they are testing the pizza and then all of the sudden the sides of the building drop down and they are in the middle of a "dairy" farm to show where their cheese comes from-grazing cows in a field.

Khakis always makes me think of fundie christian men, because that was what they all wore to the church I used to go to. Khakis and Hawaiian/tropical button up shirts.

This one is ubiquitous, and every single time it comes on I want to throw something at the TV. Aside from all the obnoxious, reductive heteronormative assumptions (hungry teenage boys on the rampage; smiling, indulgent Mom is just hanging out at home, making sure there are enough frozen, processed snack foods to meet their needs when they arrive in en masse), are we supposed to be favorably impressed that any adolescent likes to be known as "Meat"?

Yeah, just like it's not withdrawal, it's "discontinuation syndrome". Whatever. I thought I was never going to feel normal again. Feeling like someone is pouring ice down your spine while hitting your brain with a 9-volt battery is awesome! Totally worth the months taking it and having it not be effective!

Those late night commercials for "male enhancement" products complete with model-esque female spokesdroid drooling over how much the product has helped her man slip her the er.. well... yeah.
Pretty much any ad where scantily clad females are used to sell something that is more or less targeted towards a specific demographic - socially inept males looking to get laid by hott chix. (Because who else watches SyFy at 1AM on a Friday night except GEEKS) ;)

(I am a female geek and find the idea behind these commercials to be pretty absurd)

My husband, his brother, and his father all do/did. I suspect it's a genetic flaw. No love for chocolate either. Apparently husband can taste the bitter flavors too strongly? I don't know, but it's more for me.

I will contribute that I really hate payday loan and furniture rental ads. But that's more the companies than the ads.

I hate the way coffee tastes. I don't drink coffee. Or go out of my way for caffeine, either.

Then have I got the energy drink for you! You'll be doing the NYT Sunday crossword with your feet up on the kitchen table. Just you wait.

i guess what i meant was they are saying that people who drink coffee hate how coffee tastes and they'd rather be drinking something flavorless. i think that people who drink coffee probably like coffee. i dont really like how coffee tastes, so i dont drink it.

I don't like coffee either but if you had liberal amounts of soymilk and sugar, it is bearable.

I know that this has been discussed on the boards before, but it still drives me batty whenever I see it. A company which still practices vivisection supposedly "cares" about animals? Ummm.... riiiiight...

Yes, that's horrible. But it's essentially the same message given by many ads. By doing something as trivial or (depending on the product) selfish or destructive as buying stuff, you are actually doing something meaningful. Powerful. PROFOUND.

If you just buy this dish soap, you will be a wildlife champion! You'll be defending helpless animals! Making the world a better place!

You're not just another drone programmed to buy more and more and more—you're a WARRIOR!

Feh.

have you guys seen the movie The Invention of Lying? the commercials they show within the movie are hilarious because there's no such thing as lying so they are just like "drink this high fructose corn syrup soda. it tastes good, but it will kill you"

but...funnier than that.

Funny high fructose corn syrup just got mentioned, because my nominee is ... the 'sweet surprise' HFCS promotional ads. They start out with 'only stupid people have concerns about HFCS' ("what do people say about HFCS?", to which the concerned individual can only manage "Uhhhhhh ...") and then follow it with a statement that is at least very misleading. "Sugar is sugar. Whether it comes from corn or sugar cane your body can't tell the difference. Actually, it probably can, given that the two are chemically distinct, not just from different sources. Do the different substances have relevant health related differences? You'd think the HFCS boosters would try to make a case for their view, but they'd rather add to consumer confusion I guess.

Man I hate those ads.
