My veg group has a lot of CM members. This happened in Porto Alegre, the capital of the state, and it's been all over the news.
The guy may be claiming psych BS now but when he was interviewed by the press, on national radio and TV, his first words were "i was surrounded by cyclists and i acted in self defence"
http://zerohora.clicrbs.com.br/zerohora ... 228009.xml
this page explains the whole mess a bit better and with some interesting maps and images (i will also not watch the video) but the most important thing is that the guy hit the cyclists (saying he was acting in defense of him and his 15 year old son, who i can't remember if was actually in the car or not), left the scene of the crime, and then abandoned his car later that day hoping to get away with it- multiple crimes resulting in injuries of at least 15 people.
CM also doesn't have much of a history of aggression here- indiv cyclists can be aggressive but you don't see the kind of activity here that you see in the US, for example, so it's doubly shocking.
the legal uproar right now is that although a judge ordered pre-trial custody for the guy (which he is serving, in a psych ward), this random legal student unrelated to the case filed a suit trying to overturn it, saying that the judge was playing to the media instead of acting reasonably. It's doubtful the judge will respond to it considering the media attention, but also considering public outrage.

And to some degree, isn't the point of a protest to be annoying enough to get someone to think?

This. I like protests. They're inconvenient, crazy, loud, etc., but with a point (usually). When I'm commuting by bike I try to obey signals and be a polite rider because I know I'm representing a lot of other people. That said, I still think critical massers are doing the same thing just in a different, more annoying way. I've done some CM rides and they were fun. They were publicized a bit so people knew to avoid the road we were on.

Saying they deserved it is really pointless and counterproductive.
