Sure, though I only buy stuff once every few weeks. I will make a point to not do it that day, though.

I'm going to a wedding reception that day.

I am usually doing my wedding shopping the day of, because I hate shopping for weddings most of the time.

Dammit! I'm gonna have to shop ahead of time! Actually they are registered on Amazon, too bad there won't be an awesome street fair the day of the wedding like the last wedding I went to, handmade awesome stuff instead of wedding registry.

BAH!

I've said it before, but I don't understand why we only celebrate buy nothing day under the banner of Adbusters. fork Adbusters! I buy nothing many days of the year. If I have buy tin foil or something on Black Friday, then so be it.

All snark directed at Adbusters, not at anyone who participates in BND. It's a nice idea, but I don't really like brand-sponsored holidays.

I'm selling at a craft fair that day and I hope people 'celebrate' by supporting their small, local and independent businesses.

I'm in for not leaving the house day, but I sometimes get suckered in for online deals.

Way to stick it to the man, Fee.

But...but...I need new socks and black Friday is half-off sock day at Freddies! I suppose I appreciate the sentiment, but ultimately I'm not going to buy anything on that day that I wouldn't buy on another day. I'll just get it cheaper.

yeah. I'm with you! I'm not a fan of adbusters. I did do buy nothing day last year and it was cool, but harder than I expected it to be. I haaate black friday, so I would never go to a mall or anything. But also, I don't really do holiday presents, so for me not buying anything on that day doesn't make much of an impact.

Yes, I am all for decreasing consumerism. But this day has always struck me as weird because i have always heard people say they are going to buy gas or groceries or whatever a day earlier or later so they can buy nothing on that day. That doesn't seem like much of an impact to me. If you're going to just do without anything you would have bought on that day and spend the day making homemade Christmas presents instead, then that's awesome. Personally I hate crowded stores and also am a major procrastinator so it's not like I'd be doing any holiday shopping until three days before I see my family anyway, so I probably won't buy stuff but I don't think that carries much weight.

I wonder if monsters make an appropriate wedding gift?

Actually maybe the ornaments would be useful, but my friend's would need 2 letters, not just one (her name is KC, and just putting K wouldnt feel right).

Yeah, that reminds me of some religions that celebrate Sabbath by not doing/buying anything or going anywhere. But if you just plan to go the night before, does it still count? I just don't know how that really changes things. But one day, where thousands of people got together and held off from buying things, that might actually work. But who knows.

i like the sentiment, but it feels a little like "meat-free monday" to me. it's a nice gesture, but i feel like i do more when i buy local, handmade, etc or try to cut down on purchases in general. i know some people go overboard with christmas shopping, but this is the one time of the year my immediate family exchanges gifts. buying gifts for my family is hardly the most wasteful money i've spent this year.

All I plan on doing that day is sitting around eating cold leftover tofurkey and weaving strips of cardboard together.

I don't know, make a dent. Make people notice something. But I was feeling really optimistic when I wrote that. I was thinking that if a ton of people participated, maybe it would get some press and instead of newscasters talking about how much everyone's spending on black friday they could talk about the people who weren't. And maybe it would get a few people thinking about consumerism and how self-destructive our society is. But I guess it wouldn't matter anyway, because we're all forked.

I pretty much never buy anything on Black Friday anyway because I can't stand pushing, shoving crowds so I stay home and let everyone else duke it out for the bargains. It's not really a statement, though.

i just imagined a white monster with a veil and a black monster with buttons like a tux, and i think they do make an appropriate wedding gift.

My monsters are gender neutral and would be wearing matching wizard capes. I fail at marketing.

They are nerdy people and would be fine with capes.

But seriously...I would get 2 ornaments with initials if you o one KC and one S, and if it can be done by Sunday morning before I leave for Ohio. But that might be stressful/impossible.
