I want to see Beck do one of his chalkboard extravaganzas on veganism and related crazy conspiracies.
I want to see if he can connect veganism to George Soros and the Illuminati like he does everything else (bananas, Thomas Jefferson, Mama's Family; you name it, he can connect the dots).
I want to see him slowly take off his glasses, shake his head, and SOB over veganism.

When he announced this in Houston, he blamed George Soros.

He claimed he was literally poisoned by reading liberal books and that's why he has so many health problems.

Well the thing is that she's being really vitriolic about something that nobody actually said. There's no caste system for putting naughty people at the bottom. An ethical vegan is different than someone who eats a vegan diet by definition. My understanding is that an ethical vegan eats a vegan diet AND makes sure not to buy leather, use products tested on animals, etc. while someone who is a dietary vegan simply eats vegan food.

Like you, I don't agree with the assessment, but I can see why people keep looking at things that way. There is an in-crowd vegan subculture vibe. Liberal atheist yogi/yogini mountain bike rider cbc people will feel a lot more comfortable.
People also like to use the words as an award for doing something different. Telling people "no you are not a vegan, vegetarian, etc" deprives them of that feeling of accomplishment and invokes, however wrong, a feeling of exclusion.

Makes people excluded, or you know, just pissed off.
I'm vegan. I'm not an AR vegan or an ethical vegan or a weekend vegan or any other qualified kind of vegan. I don't have a single reason for being vegan, I have many, and none of them take precedence. So I'm just a vegan, straight up.
And I get annoyed when people start creating taxonomies of vegans, which seems to be happening a lot around here lately. This--"ethical vegans and people who merely adhere to a vegan diet"--basically means that some people are vegans (the "ethical" ones) and those who aren't vegan for a particular set of reasons "merely" eat a vegan diet. That latter group doesn't get to be called vegan at all. Which I guess would be me, since I'm not an "ethical vegan."
I guess that makes me an unethical vegan. So Imma going to torture a kitten or something now.

Do you have any tattoos or have you ever had your picture taken with a rescued farm animal? :) I noticed a lack of denial for liberal politics, biking, atheism or a cbc affiliation :). In my experience, not many vegans are hippies. Hippies tend not to go further than vegetarianism for some reason.

I'm not an 'ethical' vegan either. I don't buy or eat animal products, I figure I'm just vegan.

I agree that it's dumb to make a distinction between an ethical vegan and someone who eats a vegan diet. There are lot of people who might start out eating a vegan diet, but they may eventually extend that to not buying animal products. Why make them feel excluded right out of the gate? And like others are saying, not everyone who participates in a totally vegan lifestyle (excluding food and any other animal products from their life) would call themselves an ethical vegan, but they're certainly vegan. Categorizing veganism seems pointless.
Also, Glenn Beck is dumb. I feel gross even typing his name.

I guess that makes me an unethical vegan. So Imma going to torture a kitten or something now. Well, you know, you completely quoted me out of context, but I'll gladly drop the "merely," as I should have been more sensitive. And I don't know if you're unethical or not, but you do seem quick to judge others. I'm old, and at the time I learned about veganism, the following was the common definition: "Veganism may be defined as a way of living which seeks to exclude, as far as possible and practical, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, the animal kingdom for food, clothing, or any other purpose..." ( THE VEGAN; Winter 1985 ). At that time as now, there were a lot of people who chose to eat a vegan diet but not to adopt the entire lifestlye; they were termed "strict vegetarians." Now both are lumped together under vegan, and it does cause confusion. I've unintentionally insulted more than a few vegans by assuming their interest was for compassion, only to be told 'I don't give a crepe about animals, I'm doing this for my health' ala Glenn Beck.

people are insulted if you assume they are vegan because they care about animals? I feel like most vegans I've met care about animals, their health and the environment to varying degrees. I guess I've met junk food AR vegans who didn't care about their health, but for the most part, people seem to care at least a little bit about everything.
