Ugh. A tweet from a local coffee shop that serves alcohol and food: "You know when you hear girls say 'I was so gone last night, I shouldn't have?' We could be that mistake! Happy Hour: 4 - 7:30"

The idea that women have to get drunk to justify or indulge in behavior that's socially unacceptable, and then society's flipping that into women who are drunk are always consenting.

I am similarly not all that believing when it comes to large-scale "cover ups." I tend to think that the nature of the structure of the organization squashes all to conform to its needs - more harshly punishing minor infractions of sexual codes to maintain control while simultaneously maybe being likely to dismiss allegations that would ruin that same control should they become public. And of course, the organization is full of the same rape-denying people we live with in civil society. Some of them just have an obscene amount of power over both victim and perpetrator which makes the narrative of rape victims not being believed just that much more messed up, even if it's not at all unusual.

I think that is really well said. I agree that there probably isn't a giant orchestrated plot, with people intentionally seeking to cover-up sexual assaults. But there is a pattern of cover-ups that just springs from the nature of the organization. And like colleges, the people who are in the lower ranks of the military, are often those who are likely to be young, away from home for the first time, and more vulnerable to being both preyed on and pressured.

A friend of mine was in JAG, and while he says that his years in the Navy were the happiest of his life, he has told me that he would never want his daughter joining the Navy, because of the likelihood of her being the victim of sexual assault. He said "Stick a bunch of horny young men, high on testosterone, who are learning how to be violent in the world, who are away from home and still figuring out how to be adults in society in tight proximity to young women, and you're going to get a lot of rapes." It sticks with me, because for me, even one rape is too many, but for him (a really lovely and decent man), it still had the flavor of "boys will be boys." Like the 3 star general who dismissed a sexual assault conviction that I referenced above, talking about how she didn't want to ruin someone's future for one mistake.

Ugh, this is so depressing. The Women and Gender Studies department at Stony Brook University was cut a couple of years ago because of low funding. It was merged with some other programs into a new department called Cultural Analysis and Theory. And now they're starting a new Center for the Study of Men and Masculinities. While I think this is an interesting and valid area of study, it makes me angry that the money isn't being put towards keeping the WAGS department going and making masulinities part of that. http://commcgi.cc.stonybrook.edu/am2/pu ... ?=marquee6

This just reminded me of a similar story I heard about a university in Australia who had a Women's department (like, a student activist organisation, not as a field of study), and were petitioned by some men to have a Men's department in the interests of "not being sexist" or something (ugh)... The Women's department eventually got axed for some political reason, but the Men's department still exists. This makes me so so angry.

This is kind of awesome: an al Jazeera blog post about a group of Indian women (the Red Brigade = India's Code Pink?) who are taking social justice into their own hands, since the s l o w Indian system is continuing to fail them. http://blogs.aljazeera.com/blog/asia/re ... -sex-abuse

Quote:
When (the Red Brigade) started, they received little recognition. In fact they were ostracised and called "Call girls" and other demeaning names. Mothers would warn their daughters to stay away from the group, while men, intimidated by them, would spread nasty rumours about them. But since December, when in India it was suddenly OK to talk about sexual abuse, the Red Brigade has been elevated from a gang of slum women looking to cause trouble, to empowered women who can help their community. In fact just a couple of weeks ago they won a national bravery award.

There are forums for "punters," men who frequent prostitutes, that they can discuss, recommend, review, etc, the women they pay for sexual services. The Invisible Men Project is displaying selected comments from these forums, and asking the question: What do you think of HIS choice?
Here's the link. *trigger warning* *graphic content* http://the-invisible-men.tumblr.com/

And here is an article from The New Statesman discussing the project. http://www.newstatesman.com/helen-lewis ... rostitutes

JJ Abrams was on Conan basically saying that it was OK that they had Alice Eve in her underwear for no reason at all* because they also had a scene where Kirk was shirtless (in bed with 2 women) and Benedict Cumberbatch in the shower (which was cut from the movie). I really don't think he gets it.

*He claimed it was because Kirk is the kind of guy that would try to look at a woman in her underwear even in an inappropriate situation (like a dangerous mission). Surely by the 23rd century, people will have figured out that it's not OK to ogle your subordinates in their underwear. Regardless, why was she changing right then and there? We come back to no reason at all.

Lady brains. Because they’re just different, you know?

Quote:
Billionaire hedge fund executive Paul Tudor Jones believes mothers don’t make good traders because having babies and breast-feeding are focus and ambition “killers.”

“Every single investment idea … every desire to understand what is going to make this go up or go down is going to be overwhelmed by the most beautiful experience … which a man will never share, about a mode of connection between that mother and that baby,” Jones told an audience at the University of Virginia, according to a video obtained by the Washington Post. “And I’ve just seen it happen over and over.”

http://www.salon.com/2013/05/23/billion ... singleton/

Because we all know men don't bond with their children.

I think I was on the receiving end of street harassment on my way home this evening, by two men shouting from a car. It might have been offensive if they'd been going slow enough for me to hear what they said.

More annoying than sexist but I hate reading articles about sex and relationships and them referring to your partner as "your man".

Oh Lard, my friend calls her husband "her man" all the time and it squicks me out for some reason. Today it was all about how Memorial Day really brings home the point that "her man" is up there flying for our freedom. Barf! For multiple reasons.

I hate that we don't take domestic violence seriously.
