Here's a post by Watson herself that also links to a variety of other pieces about Elevatorgate. The piece I linked is in response to Richard Dawkins' absurd response to her initial complaint.

Dawkins is an asshat. While Watson was "overreacting," he got pissy because he had to toss out some honey he tried to take on a plane.

This is all so true, it hurts. I'm a synthetic organic chemist, about to get my Ph.D. It's definitely an old boys club. I'm staying in science but leaving the field.

I thought of you a lot when reading the piece, couroupita, and wondered if you might also be an organic chemist. That sucks. Not sure you want to hash through more than what you've put in the grad students thread, but if you want to? I can't believe that kind of bullshiitake exists, boys club or no (re: time and stress expectations). But to add a boys club on top of that? forking ridiculous. Imagine how much more synthesis (or whatever) could happen if you didn't reject 50% of your potential workers and treated them like human beings.

From some Jezebel comments:

Quote:
I wonder how many attractive white actresses have said the exact same thing Shailene Woodley said. "I just see people, not gender."

I'm not saying she's lying, but it seems a little... scripted.

--

Well, but how many college-aged girls have said the same? I certainly hung out with more than my share. I give it a pass. She's at a time in her life when she's finally getting sexual agency; it can be a heady, introspective time.

All I wanna say is FUUUUUUUUCCCCKK YOU GUYS. That's all I've got.

An attempt at highlighting gender imbalance in academia: http://forgenderequityatconferences.blogspot.fr/
The authors (a man and a woman) are trying to get high profile scientists to agree to invite more women to keynote conferences. My field is pretty evenly balanced in that regard. Others are not. I like their attempt to change it, especially the FAQ answers about invisible biases.

Hey all, I need some suggestions for good articles/essays (online please) that I can send to someone in my life who is quite ignorant about sexism and feminism while being mindblowingly sexist himself. (E.g., when he heard about a local sexual assault case said 'I talk to that guy once, he seemed nice. She must be lying'; doesn't understand why there is an Int'l Women's Day and no Int'l Men's day (I KNOW); is all 'why would Jared Leto want to look like a woman with that hair/why would Cher's daughter want to look like a man/why do lesbians date butch women why don't they then just date men (I KNOW)) I've really gone blue in the face trying to explain even the basics of why these thoughts blowwww but to no avail. I need to turn to the experts. Please help, thanks!

Randi, go to Shakesville! They have a feminism 101 tab that lists A TON of articles on the basics and they have incredible explanations. I've been sending a ton to my boyfriend lately.

Apparently there actually is an International Men's Day. Because I guess the other 363 days (obvs not including Int'l Women's Day) aren't good enough.

Randi, I hate to say it, but I suspect people like that just aren't going to get it, because they don't want to. They've made up their minds and nothing you say can change them. But if other people are less jaded than me and can provide you with some resources, I hope you can report back some day that he's made a positive change.

Could this be a lack of empathy? I was just wondering about his lack of taking other people's feelings/opinions/thoughts into consideration when he judges a situation.
Here's a link: http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/sto ... stic-trait

Although if he is a bit of a narcissist, it's typically impossible to convince him of this, since they always think they're right no matter what and they're very resistant to change ;)

Good luck!

Dammit. Well, the photo itself doesn't matter, more the caption. It says, "Ladies, if your boyfriend cant [sic] drive a standard you have a girlfriend."

Please don't post things that PPKers have posted on facebook, if the person does still post here they're probably going to get offended and then it's going to be weird. Don't cross the social media streams, and all that.

I've actually had conversations with my boss about my post PhD career (as an organic chemist), and he agrees that women have to plan more about having a family and having children, and how some institutions, if you go academic, are not amenable to the latter. Then, he does a 180 (on the days that he is frustrated and cranky) and will make comments about it is better to make your boss happy than your long term bf (who is the keeper of my sanity, and I've told my boss as much).

6 people were attacked by nazis after a feminist demonstration in Malmö, Sweden on International Women's Day. One is still in a coma now, two days later. I can't find anything in english about it. It is horrible.

I think a couple of us can read, or pretend to read, Danish. Also, we can just use google to translate it. Link?
Also, seriously, what the fizzle.
