Does anyone watch amy schumer's show on comedy central? I love it, especially the second season, which seems to have a lot more feminist sketches (body dysmorphia, women in the military, dudes who want gfs who can hang like bros). My husband loved last season and is complaining this season isn't funny because it's all about women's issues and that that's his problem with female comedians. Apparently male comedians just do "comedy" but most female comedians do "women's comedy". I was so surprised, I didn't even know how to respond. It's so frustrating and disheartening to hear someone I love and respect say dumb stuff like that.

Just like Nicholas Sparks writes "fiction" but Danielle Steele (is there a difference between their books? Weepy, drecky romances) writes "women's fiction."

See also: "history" vs. "women's history." Because the women were off having their own (presumably pink and obsessed with chocolate) history while the men were founding civilizations and making art and fighting in wars and stuff.

Last week my co-author (male) and I had a paper published in a good journal. I'm really proud of it for a lot of reasons, and also wrote most of the text. Co-author is my supervisor and wrote maybe 1000 words of it, I did everything else, though obviously with guidance. Today he and I had a meeting. Turns out he's already received several emails (from other men) praising this paper. I have not received any. Considering he works in a different field and this paper is part of my dissertation project, and academia (life!) sucks for women, I'm having a hard time not being pissed.

Wow, that's terrible! I also wonder why he didn't forward the emails to you? If I received emails praising a collaborative effort and the other contributor's address wasn't on there I would forward them and copy in the sender.

I ran across this book at work yesterday. Bonus points for the note at the bottom. (Apologies for the poorly-lit, cell-phone picture.)

Ew! How weird. I kind of want to read it just out of morbid curiosity.

(Also, that cover design challenges my eyeballs. Sometimes your cutesy typography just isn't going to work. Let it go and move on.)

Is that an actual book? Or an actual book, which is a spoof? (Hoping for the latter!)

An actual book. I had the pleasure of pricing it down to a ridiculously low price because it was dead stock. (I.e. it hadn't sold in 12 months.)

Interesting for people who like fashion history, not a terribly big group I imagine.

I received this charming (I don't mean 'charming') email from my dad today. I want a good link to throw back at him about privilege and/or feminism, because he is covered in sand. Our relationship is already having enough issues that if this kind of thing continues, I'm done trying to have a relationship with him. Help? (Help with a link, not with our relationship, unless you'd like to commiserate.)

Quote:
With great trepidation, I invite all who can speak and write, to stop this mad, immoral movement "Women's Rights," with all its attendant miseries ... If women succeed in "depriving themselves of their own sex" by maintaining that they are equal to men, it they become the most hated, wicked, and vile creatures that will surely perish without male protection.

eta: He is quote Queen Victoria at me, but damn if that isn't his sentiment. I've been hearing non-stop women hatred from him about his divorce from my mother (and all women in general! Wait, but I'm a woman, wait, but he didn't mean "me" "me", only "me" when I remind him of my mother, seriously, the fork?!) ...Anyway, I am very interested in a link. I know they've come up several times in this thread and the privilege thread, but I'm still on limited internets from the concussion and would appreciate having one thrown at me.

Sounds like maybe he still needs some time to get through his divorce and leave you (and other women) out of it! Doesn't seem like a bad idea to keep your distance for a while!

The divorce started when I was 5 and ended when I was 9. I am now 29. Thanks for saying distance = great, annak.

I don't see the need to send any link or communication. If he wants to remain bitter and angry it isn't your job to listen to the jibber jabber. If he just wants an audience for his rantings, you don't have to be that audience.

Yeah, it doesn't deserve a response, unless you want to tell him not to send things like that in the future.

This is my feeling as well. I don't know what the context of that quote was (was it part of a larger point, or did he just send you what you posted here on its own?), but based on the attitude expressed it's hard to imagine a response that would lead to a thoughtful or intelligent dialogue. I mean, I can understand your impulse to fire back (and I'm bound to say that's a pretty ironic sentiment coming from a woman who was head of the British Empire at its most powerful), but what would actually be achieved except annoyance and a migraine when your head already has enough to deal with? I say delete without a reply and let him take his misogynist ranting somewhere else.

However, the discussion that we won't seem to have is how we educate our boys. A lot of the mass murderers did what they didn't because they didn't have the social skills to get women. That wasn't the only reason, but it was the driver for VA Tech & Aurora. Media fuels the misogyny as we see so many "players" and "pimps" getting women, but that tremendously awkward guy probably never will unless he has strong parents or a good mentor. It seems so easy, but the cards are so stacked against them. I'm on the front lines here. I teach at a middle school and will often volunteer to mentor the boys who start to give classmates (and other teachers) the creeps. I hope we can have this discussion, but I'm afraid it will get buried by the other issues, that are important, but I don't think gets to the root of the problem here.

this just showed up in a comment on a friend's post about the Isla Vista violence. i don't even forking know how to respond to it.
