I haven't shaved mine since I was 14 (I did it for a few months, realized it was bullshiitake, and stopped), and I have never had any problem attracting Suitable Partners; why, I even caught me a husband!

It's been over two years since I last shaved so I'm surprised this is the first time they've commented. Just the usual nonsense about it looking bad and being unhygienic - but thankfully I have the confidence to explain that I like not having irritated skin and I prefer not to shave, and besides, if it's so unhygienic then why don't men shave?

Though I kind of wish I had explained that by shaming women who don't shave, they're perpetuating the idea that women's bodies are naturally disgusting and need to be made hairless to be acceptable, which is bullshiitake. One minute they're reinforcing the idea that my body is disgusting and the next minute they're complaining I have low self-esteem... It seems ridiculous to me that they don't connect those dots.

The "unhygienic" thing is one I hadn't heard before (outside the context of childbirth, where women were routinely shaved for much of the 20th century). My understanding has always been that hairy legs and/or armpits - let's not even talk about pubic hair - on a woman spell eternal spinsterhood because it means you don't look like Barbie, a porn actress, or a pre-pubescent girl (so hot).

Huh. Women over 18 in the UK get invited to have smear tests every few years, but other than that I've never had anyone suggest taking a gander at my hoo-ha to check everything's okay. Are you telling me an entire nation of women are doing this every year as a matter of course??

YES! Every year since I was 16!

I've heard of some young girls being pressured into having a pelvic exam or they wouldn't get a birth control prescription, but it's definitely not mandatory. I think I've had about five pelvic exams total, including the ones during and after pregnancy, and I'm 34 and have been on prescription birth control for at least ten years. Usually when I see a midwife they ask if I want it done.

Women are very pressured to have yearly exams in the US. Not only does my gyno send out reminders and try to set up your next appointment a year in advance when you're there in person, my insurance company will send me a reminder letter and when I was on my dad's insurance they would send him a reminder to remind me.

And few providers will refill a birth control prescription without one.

That's how I lost my birth control. They would never let me get my birth control without an exam, even when I told them I hadn't had sex with anyone since I last had my prescription (they wanted me to come in every 6 months). My gyno was far away and I don't know how to drive, we had no public transportation in my area and the office was only open while I was in classes. I explained all of this to them and promised I would come in next month once my classes were over if they would just extend my prescription by one month and they denied me. I never went back. And now I'm having trouble getting birth control again. fork them so much. Not only do I need it for actual birth control, but I have one of the worst periods ever (and they know this) where I shake, pass out, get sick, puke, have horrendous cramps and my blood sugar drops.

It wasn't even until I went to my feminist college that the health office told me that having a yearly exam is a totally outdated practice.

Why did they want you to come in every six months? Some days it is hard to believe doctors are in it for anything but padding their schedules (and the payments that go along with that). With the lack of primary care docs it is really a scandal how much forking time and money they waste with unnecessary exams.

They told me that's how often it was necessary for a woman of my age (about 20 or 21 at the time) to have an exam.

I can't imagine how hard I would laugh at my doctor if they said I had to get an exam every six months. Nah dude, you're not getting in my vag more often than dick does.

In an article I will not link, because it is that awful, the author wanted to substitute the phrase "date rape" with the phrase "mistake sex".
I was mistake stabby.

These two articles:

1) A piece by HuffPo about a recent interview Scalia gave where he said (paraphrasing HuffPo's paraphrase) "Women don't necessarily have constitutional protection against discrimination". http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/01/0 ... 03813.html

2) A piece by Jezebel which points out that US women soccer players are the highest international scorers ever, and no one hears about it because commentators always use men as the default, so a US male player with 57 goals gets called "the all-time US leading goal player" even though the top 5 US women players have scored 100-167 goals. http://jezebel.com/world-cup-soccer-sta ... 1601275793

kfad: That article would make me mistake stabby, too.

So I read ValleyWag because it's relevant to my life (as a tech worker in SV). Sometimes it is so wildly goddamn infuriating/depressing. I feel like I should play some sort of drinking game where you drink for every story on the front page about a woman being harassed or discriminated against in tech in the valley.

You could also play one where you drink every time any poster says "there is no gender discrimination in tech" or "I don't know any woman who has experienced this" or "ValleyWag stop white knighting" but you would die of alcohol poisoning before you got very far.

Ugh, C&S, as impressed by and supportive of women in SV as I am, I am so, so glad I am not a tech worker. I read ValleyWag from time to time and yes, it is infuriating. I deal with the brogrammers in that they all live in SF and the East Bay and they clog up the local dating pool. But thank goodness I don't have to work with them or in their industry. Sending you my sympathy and ladystrength!

The company I work for is actually extremely pro diversity and aggressively recruits minorities and women. I know people in tech love to bisque about affirmative action but the fact is, as a person who belongs to a tech minority, it makes an incredible difference in the work environment for me. It's part of why I took this job and part of why I stay here-- because people just treat me like a forking human and not like some sort of space oddity.

But it kills me that this is a factor I have to consider. And honestly it makes me feel guilty, because I could work for a billion other companies with higher visibility, maybe contribute to a positive change for women, maybe push my personal talent further (and definitely make more money)-- but instead I picked what's comfortable. Because I don't want to deal with it. I just want to be able to do my job!

I'm glad to hear your workplace doesn't suck! I know that for all the douchey Tinders out there, there are plenty of other companies quietly doing good things, releasing important products, and working with a well-treated, diverse crew. It just sucks that the Tinders of the world get all the press! At any rate, I imagine it's frustrating to imagine that you're in sort of an oasis in your industry and should you ever (heavens forbid) be looking for a job again, you'll have to contend with that.

On Facebook, I saw a list titled "Rules For Dating My Son".
They are as follows.

1. He is not your ATM
2. If you show up to my house looking like a stripper, I will make you go away.
3. If I see any "sexts" on his phone, I will make you go away.
4. Understand that if I don't like you, I will make you go away.
5. Understand that I can make you go away.
6. He's a "mama's boy". Unless you have a ring on your finger, your opinion of that doesn't matter.
7. You are not in charge of him and it is not up to you to change him. Take him for who he is, or see rule #5.
8. He is a gentleman. I taught him that. You better act like a lady and deserve that.
9. I know how to avoid jail.
10. If you weasel your way past these rules and fake your way to a ring on your finger, I will be something much worse than your boyfriend's mom, I will be your mother in law.

Yeah...

On the phone ordering more testosterone, and I'm telling the clerk my doctors info: "Dr. Suzanne [lastname], fax number [number]..." Clerk: "Okay so we'll fax this to your doctor, and when he gets back to us..." They actually went on to use 'he' multiple times! After their shpeel I said "My doctor uses female pronouns actually..." And it took them a second to figure it out! "Oh right Suzanne [lastname]..."

I was in a teleconference at work last week and the guy I was talking to kept on referring to every single person who works in our winery/warehouse as "the boys." 80% of our winery staff are female. I told him that and he was like "haha, maybe the office staff!" I ended the call as soon as I could.
