"Yes. And...?"

I'm not sure I get it. Is being a straight ally supposed to be a hilarious joke or something? How dare you, vijita. How dare you.

It was like a "poke fun at the new hippie girl but it's all in good fun"-type "joke". If you can wrap your head around that, because I can't. I was talking about how much I love Orange is the New Black--I mean, just normal lunchroom conversation shiitake, right?

It got worse because two awesome coworkers are learning how to make seitan from me on Sunday and the homophobe/hateful person was all "that's disgusting. I was born and raised on meat, I ain't eatin' no fake hippie meat." I...didn't offer you any? And forking hell with people calling me a hippie! That term is obsolete and I was practically raised in the barnyard of a cattle farm in Alberta so just because I made great decisions and changes in my life does not mean I followed the Dead for years (EVEN THOUGH MY HUSBAND DID WHATEVER).

Aw, clearly the homophobe is feeling left out so lashes out at you being vegan and not a hateful crasshole. Poor her (except not really).

Whatever, at least you have two cool coworkers who are learning how to make seitan! Two trumps her one, so there.

The book I just read ("Plane Queer") describes how the 1950s were basically the most homophobic decade of the last century. I think we tend to remember economically prosperous times more fondly and gloss over human and civil rights problems, especially once those who lived through them are older or gone.

I watch a few people who make videos. Usually they are reviewing a movie, game, or book. They will make a lot of statements that are very feminist. (Why does female character need male character to do this? The male character is despicable because he is sexually harassing the female character, the female's need to be more than just eye candy) A lot of what they say is usually not much different from what feminist bloggers are saying. They will even point out stuff that I didn't notice. But it seems that they will always say either on twitter or facebook that they are not a feminist. One even said that he things the the feminist movement only had it about 30% right. (and he doesn't say what he agrees and disagrees with) Another said that the pay gap isn't real because a degree in women's studies is not the same as a medical degree. (Because you know, all feminist are women's studies majors ::rolls eyes:: And completely ignores that men and women with the SAME job are paid differently) They will always claim that they are for equal rights. I don't know if these people just think that all feminist are straw feminist that they see on TV or what.

My favourite is "The pay gap is women's choice not sexism"

She may as well have said "Wibble, wibble, cluck, cluck, cluck, cigar!" It would have made as much sense.

Thanks for sharing. I think a lot about how to convince my daughters that they can tell me when things like this happen. It's really hard knowing that legally nothing will happen most of the time.

My book club read "Yes Means Yes" a few years ago - some of the essays in it have stuck with me ever since. It's not the most even collection, but some of it is extraordinary. Got me hooked on Kate Harding's writing as well (her essay "How to fork a Fat Girl" is one of the more powerful things I've read on body size).

I believe that's actually one of Phyllis Schlafly's more famous quotes.

Thanks for the recommendation annak! I'll find it.

And yes, the article about the "Not Rape" epidemic has haunted me since I read it. It just makes not-rape seem so inevitable for young people. Its hard to realize that even with all the awareness on these issues, we're still raising young men who think rape is acceptable. Probably because most of the awareness is directed to young women, and about how to stay safe, not to young men, to build a sense that sex with someone who isn't enthusiastically consenting isn't acceptable.

I am the copy editor for my research cluster's quarterly newsletter. One of the regular columns (with rotating writers) is a post-doc column where they write about ... anything they want. This time, it's a male postdoc writing about the "constitutional injustice" of the Rosalind Franklin Foundation's grant programs which specifically aim to support research careers for women in science because of a bunch of scientific studies which show that women are discriminated against, especially when it comes to getting funding for independent projects. Male postdoc even cites those studies (I kid you not!) to say that the RFF is not only exhibiting gender bias, but also gender discrimination and he's angry because he can't be funded. Seriously male postdoc? Ugh. I just wrote a letter to the Editor saying I think the piece is extremely problematic and should not be printed, and am now waiting for a reply.

edited for: consistency of reference, spelling, etc.

Editor replied to my email. His response is below. Having Female Prof (who won RFF) "join" the discussion still presents male postdoc's views as reasonable (cf. "climate change deniers" vs. scientist debates in the US). His view is not reasonable. I think it is inappropriate for a university-sponsored publication to print this piece, even if we make it clear that male postdoc's views are not the research cluster or university's. Thoughts?

Editor wrote:
I'm not surprised by your response, I kind of expected you wouldn't like this. I agree that it is certainly on the edge, or perhaps slightly over it. But I am currently in doubt what is the best way of acting in this case. In particular, I also feel quite uncomfortable about for instance the WW2 example, and actually wrote male postdoc about that this weekend, suggesting alternative examples to illustrate the same point. However, he was rather clear that he didn't want to change it, although he appreciated my concern, and would understand that maybe we would want to add a statement that his opinion/column should not be considered as that of the research cluster/ university.

The reason why I asked male postdoc to write columns is because he has strong opinions and likes to write about various things, e.g. on facebook. In principle ideal for an edgy column that is sometimes controversial and stimulates discussion. As for his challenging view regarding 'positive discrimination', there is nothing wrong of triggering a discussion about that I think, although the way he phrases things might not be optimal/overly provocative. But it feels kind of wrong to mingle too much in that (language issues aside), more so than the constructively meant suggestions that I already offered.

Male postdoc certainly has a lot of guts to start such a discussion... The idea for the topic actually originated from a discussion on facebook about this between him and Female-RFF-grant winning Prof. One thing that male postdoc mentioned himself, is that Female Prof told him she would be eager to voice her opinion if he would bring this up in his column. To bring forward a more balanced discussion, we could indeed ask Female Prof whether she would be willing to formulate a response to his view. I had this possibility in mind for issue 96, but given your strong opinion about this, it might be better to publish that along with the current column, a possibility that again, male postdoc suggested himself. What do you think?

Is it possible that he will just make an asparagus out of himself and thereby prove the point that initiatives are needed to get and keep women in science?

Isn't it, though? It's like a 50 page essay on gender relations distilled down to one 4-second clip.

I am so forking sick of articles where cis, white men bleat about a loss of some of their privilege and how everything should stay the same or be made fairer for the poor dears and it gets dressed up as "edgy"

THERE IS NOTHING EGDY ABOUT THE STATUS QUO.
