I think that Joss Whedon wanted to direct a Wonder Woman movie but got turned down because the studio did not think that the movie would do well. I don't understand why anyone would think that a Wonder Woman movie wouldn't do well especially if Joss Whedon is directing it. I know she's a woman, but she is one of the most recognizable super heroes. Even if every man went "ew cooties!" (which would never happen because plenty of nerd guys would go) plenty of women would go see it. Women led action films have been doing pretty well.

I know that Whedon's stories aren't always perfect and sometimes have problematic elements, I think he would have been a good choice to direct Wonder Woman. (And a better choice would have been an actual woman) He does care about his female characters and wants to make them actual characters. (I did have a lot of issues with the Firefly episode where Saffron was introduced.) His name on it would get people excited for it. I'm sad that a studio didn't take him up on it. (Or who ever was the deciding factor for a Wonder Woman movie)

The Whom script sounded terrible though, with her being naive and Steve Trevor teaching her that notallmen are bad. She has the wisdom of Athena!

As a friend said "Videogames can be more than violence, they can be artful masterpieces that push fantastical boundaries (like katamari and fez). Instead we make the same tired shoot-the-badguy/stripper/hooker games over and over. " And if you dare point out the use of women as props, trophies and targets, you become the subject of violence and threats.

Quote:
Since the launch of Feminist Frequency's Tropes vs Women in Games, creator Anita Sarkeesian has faced a wall of abuse and threats from enraged critics of her detailed research that highlights misogyny in game fiction.

This week, the abusers drove her out of her own home.

"Some very scary threats have just been made against me and my family. Contacting authorities now," she wrote on Twitter last night.

She later tweeted, "I'm safe. Authorities have been notified. Staying with friends tonight. I'm not giving up. But this harassment of women in tech must stop!"

Earlier today, Sarkeesian shared a particularly disturbing series of threats from one abuser, along with a trigger warning. "I usually don't share the really scary stuff. But it's important for folks to know how bad it gets."

Jesus, what is it with gamers? Also, do not read the comments on that article, so much mansplaining and so many 'it's not about gender' posts that my rage gland overloaded.

Here is an article from the Mary Sue on this issue. The comments are usually very tame and trolls get banned. So far they are all in support of Anita and Quinn.

This is a good website in general if you are into nerd culture.

Not sure if this belongs here or the Playground, but I chose here because of the implication that it's obviously mothers' job to get the kids back to school, since no matter what decade it is, fathers are nowhere in sight. But that's just the tip of this iceberg of stupidity: apparently our only options as parents - sorry, mothers - are either filling our kids' (strictly gendered and heteronormative) lunch boxes with garbage and their lungs with second-hand smoke while they bounce around in the way-back, or being vapid, shallow, navel-gazing, spendthrift, trend-following lemmings. File this reductive nonsense right next to those ridiculous "remember the good old days when kids didn't wear bicycle helmets or seat belts? WE didn't die!" memes. I had a friend share this, which was followed by "lol, this is so true" comments. Maybe I grew up in an alternative universe but neither of my parents smoked, I didn't have a themed lunchbox and they did care about what I ate, and I find it pretty hard to believe that the average parent is so frivolous and shallow as the parent, sorry, mother, described in the Today portion. If so, it just makes me sad for society.

Your comment reminds me of what I've noticed about every back-to-school commercial I've seen on tv over the past few weeks, not a dad to be found anywhere. There's either a hell-of-a-lotta single moms or dads just don't give a shiitake about their kids (according to commercials).

I think Fox news is closer to North Korean propaganda than it is to other sub-par TV 'news' channels like CNN. The second you take a critical eye to it, it's glaringly obvious how patently ludicrous and based on magical thinking it is what they're saying. But just like North Korean propaganda, there is an enormous subset of the population who know nothing else but Fox news and the opinions spouted on it and are terrified- terrified- of the only truth they have ever known crumbling in front of their eyes.

Jennifer Lawrence, and several other celebrities have had their phones hacked, nude pictures stolen and posted online. Mary Winstead tweeted that her photos were taken with her husband and deleted long ago. The comments so far at this link are safe.

So those are your allegations, but do you have any proof? ("accuses" made it sound like she was offering her opinion, I guess.)

You know, bisque juice can be a really important part of a complete breakfast. I would have a severe bisque deficiency if it wasn't for my daily glass.

Well, maybe some women find those terms flattering! *Tee-hee*

Seriously. In fact, I drink so much of that stuff that my stored B12 will probably run out before my bitchiness does. It's bitchlicious!

Even more abuse of women in conflict zones. This link (with lots of trigger warnings) is to a WSJ blog about the way women are systematically abused by ISIS: http://blogs.wsj.com/washwire/2014/09/0 ... attention/

I'm just popping in here quickly to vent about a conversation with a friend I had earlier. In response to something someone said, I mentioned that I find it disheartening when people make generalising statements about men and women which suggest that all members of one gender are the same (e.g. "women just get more upset about relationship stuff than men") because I think stereotype building is damaging and erasing as I don't fit many female stereotypes, so does that mean I'm not a real woman? The response was, "Why do you have to bring your sexuality into this?" (I had said nothing at all that evening about being queer, not that it was especially relevant to this anyway). I nearly lost my temper completely at that point and left shortly afterwards.

That was so disturbing. I really find it so shocking that men who talk so much about needing to keep women "safe" by forcing them to cover themselves and stay out of public life for their own good, would show so little respect to them and deliberately hurt and humiliate them. I know its not new, but it still sickens me.

With the whole nude picture scandal, many men on reddit donated money to a prostate cancer charity as a way to apologize. They claimed that they were doing it because Jennifer Lawrence donated to this charity in the past. The least problematic part of this is that they donated to a charity that involves their penis after hurting a bunch of women. The worst part? The whole thing about Jennifer Lawrence donating to prostate cancer is a joke. Basically, there is evidence that cumin frequently reduces your risk of prostate cancer. And Jennifer Lawrence's contribution is that men have masturbated to her.

The charity turned down their donation.

I hate that Reddit is so quick to withdraw the McKayla Maroney pictures, because they might be child porn, (which is completely appropriate) because they point out it is a crime, but leave up naked pictures of other celebrities, even in the full knowledge that they were obtained criminally. Its just so self-serving and vile.

A former Harvard sex blogger writes about what it was like to have naked pictures of her passed around the internet, the overwhelming lack of university response, and the ways such an invasion of privacy have changed her life -- and her approach to feminism. Quote: "What happened to me was not an occupational hazard of feminism. It’s an occupational hazard of being a woman." http://time.com/3263406/jennifer-lawren ... enge-porn/
