I've been seeing an awful lot of comments (I know, I know, I shouldn't be reading them) all over the damn place of people blaming completely unrelated opinions and other things they don't agree with on political affiliation. I could maybe see during a presidential election year or something, but I can't point to anything lately to have everyone so riled on the subject. I'm at a loss. Anybody else notice this? Maybe have an explanation?

people usually want to side with something, and isolate themselves while doing so. there is always a war going on, as people always want to have something to fight against. better to believe in the enemy than to believe nothing at all, right? :\ i think political affiliation is the easiest because it's really convenient to categorise people and make assumptions about them that way; it also makes it really easy to form an identity.

what are some examples of things you've seen?

Unfortunately, here in the US, we've gotten a little too obsessed over the things that divide us.

I'll try to think of some of the others I've been seeing, but I was just reading a review of the Family Guy "Road to the North Pole" episode, which said that, for the reviewers, some of the stuff went too far. Actual quote from the review:
Spoiler: show
Tempting the reindeer with elf flesh was a tad too far. The consumerism social commentary was more entertaining than actually meaningful. Budgeoning the father, wrecking the house, and beating the mother to death in front of her daughter before tying the child to the chair as the cleaned up her parents blood was not exactly humorous.

Random person responds with
Quote:
Get off your PC high horse. This was the funniest Christmas Special ever, and it was funny for all the reasons you did not like it. All you Socialist Libs make me sick with your judgmental attitudes on everything. If for no other reason than the heavy-handed anti-greed message delivered in this episode you should be recommending it with all praise.

Yeah, I was just reading an article on yahoo about the new school lunch bill. The very last line of the article discussed how the bill had overwhelming support from both parties, and yet ... all the comments were about how "Barry" and the liberals were trying to control what we feed our kids. Apparently, they didn't read to the end.

I was hoping that someone did a study on politics and cookie preferences. Like, liberals prefer chocolate chip and conservatives prefer, I dunno, stale butter cookies or something.

well, i feel that our society is moving in two very different directions, but i like to think that it's mostly for the better. we are a very PC generation, but some people take offense to that - because their beliefs are being challenged. in reference to the family guy commenter - s/he's just taking the review as a personal attack, somehow. s/he was offended that the reviewer didn't hold the same views or appreciate the episode in the same way. there are so many messages around us now about being politically correct, and some people would just rather not deal with that stuff.

also - isn't the whole point of a review to JUDGE something? -_-

PS my friend was telling me about how awful the family guy episode was, how gory and not funny. she isn't necessarily the most PC person i've ever spoken with...haha.

i think that any time someone sees the word "consumerism" or something like that, they automatically get defensive. i mean there are so many messages out there, always telling people to feel guilty for something, and people just get sick of hearing about it.

that review didn't even really have a left-leaning tone, did it? you'd think a conservative would be more against gore than a liberal, right? (i don't know). in fact, the more i read it over, the more it sounds slightly conservative to me. so i don't know what the commenter's deal is. that is just a person full of hate, and hating on someone's political views is probably the easiest way to really insult & divide people.

My grandpa was blaming Obama for the fact that his rinky dink town in the middle of nowhere can no longer afford to have Christmas parades. Nevermind the fact that they don't even have a bank or a grocery store or a person living there under the age of 60, Obama has taken their parade!

I don't understand this thread. It was my understanding that chocolate chip cookies bring people together. If nothing else, we all have chocolate chip cookies in common, right?

When I moved here during the snowpocalypse, our bus got stuck, and one of the passengers blamed Obama for the lack of snowplows. He hadn't even been inaugurated yet.

I think the country is definitely more polarized, but it's also more visible now that you can read political comments from people you might not have otherwise associated with, exacerbated by the Internet Tough Guy syndrome. Perhaps there's also a sort of positive feedback cycle: people with extreme opinions find out that there are others out there who share their wingnuttery and that only encourages them to more absurd extremes.

I saw comments like these on an article on the Nashua Telegraph website about Trick-or-Treating being moved to 7pm instead of 8pm. Everybody needs to cool out.

Pecan sandies, i believe, are the official cookie of the GOP.

meanwhile, while people are yowling about Obama making their kids eat carrot sticks, civil rights are being trampled, people can't afford to vaccinate their kids, and the world is going to hell in a handbasket. Pay no mind to that strange Australian with wikipedia or whatever, damn liberals are making us have to wait for snowplowsl!!
