I too hope the chicken is on the mend ...

We have a friend who has a neighbour who has half a dozen chickens on their property ... the chickens have a lovely coop they are very fond of ... but one of the chickens when my friend is there & says 'hello chickens' leaps up & runs to his side ... he picks her up and she nestles against his chest ...

Thanks, everyone! The chicken (I've been calling her Valentine, or Val for short) is hanging in there eating and drinking a little on her own now. When she first came in, she wasn't eating at all and I had to syringe feed her water, so that's a small improvement. She's on antibiotics, pain meds, and vitamins. So we're just taking care of her and hoping.

Disappearing Ink wrote:
Nola has a lump on her side. It's her rib area and very moveable so I think/hope it's just a lipoma. But it just seemed to pop up all big one day. Although, it is right around her ribcage so it's possible it just felt like one of her ribs when it was smaller. Going to the vet in a couple of days to get it checked, so fingers crossed!

Fingers crossed that it's just a fatty lump!

Thanks for the good wishes, pals! It turned out it was just a contusion type thing that had filled up with fluid. V relieved. N had to have a needle in her side and some antibiotics, but it's no biggie. She was a good girl and got lots of fuss and treats from her vet (who is an awfully nice woman who appreciates Nola's true awesomeness).

Best wishes for furry and feathered loved ones. Hoping for solid recoveries.

On Friday I got a reminder of how loyal and stubborn dogs can be.

My boss occasionally brings his son’s dog to the office. Cleo is a Newfoundland, shepherd, Akita mix. HUGE dog. And totally in love with her human, Max.

The boss had a long blah blah meeting so I took Cleo out for her walk and ‘pit-stop’. She wouldn’t come back in the building. Worse, she parked herself at the foot of the busy building driveway where cars turn in and would not budge. She was looking up the street for Max and his big black truck.

I couldn’t leave her outside near busy traffic. I called Max and put my cell phone on speaker – he called her. That didn’t work. So I went into the office to get her favourite biscuits – but there weren’t any left. I put two soda crackers into her biscuit box to fake-her-out and headed outside. It worked.

She came in for two soda crackers. Likely she won’t believe me again – so we’d better stock up on her fav dog biscuits and look at fork lifts for dogs.

Oh no! I'm glad you found a way to get Cleo inside again!

Glad Nola is ok. That sounded scary.

Come on Val! Keep fighting! Get well and strong!

A little update on my chicken friend, Val: The wound she had on her back healed up 100% and her health improved greatly. Her broken leg, however, was not getting better. Our vet does not have a ton of chicken experience, so we were referred to a vet who specialises in birds. They decided that her leg needs to be amputated, and think that she will handle it well. The vet was pleased that she is getting stronger and already stands on her one good leg and hops around a bit. They also talked about chicken wheelchairs as a possibility to help her be more active!

So we have scheduled an appointment for her operation, and I'm really hoping that all goes well. She is such a sweet chicken! She loves being held and sitting outside in the sun. Even though her leg must hurt, she is happy and friendly all the time. She also laid an egg today, which the vet said she may never do because of the trauma she's been through. (Not that we care whether she does or not, but it shows that she's getting stronger.)

So, yes, we are nuts about chickens, and please keep your fingers crossed that Val's amputation goes well!

Sending good thoughts for Val!

I'm so glad you are willing to go to all this effort. So many people would not see the point.
Also, if the operation goes well and you do try some sort of chicken wheelchair and she takes to it... PLEASE post pictures. Or video if possible. My mind boggles.

Thank you! She had her operation today and is doing well.

Yes, I will definitely take pics if she gets a wheelchair! We'll see how well she gets around without one first. She's already pretty good at hopping on one foot.

Has Val already been hopping about after the operation, or is she still resting?

I've always been impressed with how well pigeons hobble about with damaged feet (the feral pigeons in Glasgow seem to have a big problem with missing toes, one foot all balled up, or one leg ending in a stump). I can't remember noticing any with only one leg though.

This is actually about my yard -- I will be SO happy when it takes an extended break from snowing and raining so my back yard isn't a mud pit. My kitchen floor looks dirty even when it's clean (stupid parchmenty looking tile), so when it's dirty, it looks awful. It's covered in little Mavis prints at all times. I keep runnin' out of Wet Jet liquid.

Anyone have luck or tips on getting a dog to pause when they first come in the door for a good foot-wiping? Because she runs into the house from outside like a bat outta hell.

Standing up and hopping a bit! We have to keep her from hopping around too much while she is healing, though. I'm sure she'll be happy when we can let her roam around more.

Val is still doing great! She had her sutures out and the incision is all healed. We've been encouraging her to stand up and hop more and she's getting stronger.

Today I had to walk to work and I decided to take Tegan with me, because it was such a nice day and it would be a good 4 mile round trip walk for her. I was a bit worried, because I don't usually walk her in that direction and sometimes she still gets freaked out by new places and refuses to walk. But she did really well! She met Val and hung out with some of the shelter dogs. Our walk home coincided with recess at a school along the way, and all the kids swarmed the fence like Tegan was a celebrity. So she made lots of new friends today!

I'm so glad to hear about Val's progress!

Also well done Tegan; celebrity status is well-deserved.

Mavis busted out of the yard twice over the weekend (I thought I'd fixed it the first time, but the wood of the fence is old and she was able to push the nail out again). It's not super hard to corral her back -- she won't come when called because she's a jerk, but she WILL get in the car if I back out of the garage. But damn, it wrecks my nerves. There's never been a moving car near her any of the times she got out, but I'm terrified she's going to get out one day and I won't notice immediately and she WILL get hit by a car. I'm only slightly less nervous about her just getting lost, because my number's on her tag and she's chipped.

I have a bunch of metal racks from work that I've been taking home and blocking all the areas where the fence goes up a little high (before she just went under it -- this time she pushed through so a board came loose), so I got some more of it and blocked the new place off. Raaaaar. I know I will need to get the whole fence replaced eventually, but I was hoping it wouldn't be for a few years.

Oh no, that's so scary! I'm glad you got her back okay! I live right on the convergence of three busy roads and that is my biggest fear too. Tegan got out of the yard once because my cousin left the gate open, and during the five minute period it took to find her I seriously thought I was going to have a heart attack.

Bigby has 3 doggie friends now! a husky, a corgi and a funny looking little mutt named donut! He still barks at most other dogs, but loves these 3! and it's the greatest thing ever in the whole world!
