so here are my new dreads, although i only have a pic of when i was halfway through doing them...


and these are the old ones i hacked off when i was all crazy with pregnancy hormones..

My husband just mentioned that i should dread my hair- i used to want to, but because if my job (elementary teacher in the American South), i didn't. I have a couple of questions:

Itchies? Do they happen? how do you deal? i currently wash about once a week with nature's gate shampoo and do water rinses or no-poo using baking soda once or twice a week.

am i going to look like i am having a midlife crisis? i am 36, with long blond hair and pretty normal looking, not heavy, not skinny, no tattoos, i used to have some extra piercings, but i had to loose them for the job. i don't care too much about what others think, but i also don't want to be someone who should never have done this, like the old ladies in short shorts. here's a recent pic of me after i i cut my hair:

You can still do dreads and make them look neat and sophisticated. You can do latch hooking, for example. With latch hooking, you can make your dreads as thin as you'd like, and you have slightly more control over how they look. The down side to latch hooking is that it is permanent. You'd have to cut your hair if you want to take them out. Non latched dreads can be combed out with a LOT of patience.

Otherwise, the key to healthy dreads is clean hair free of excess oils. A clean scalp and some shea and tea-tree oils used VERY sparingly can eliminate itching.
You could allow your dreads to form naturally instead of back combing. That would give you plenty of time to change your mind if you don't like the way it looks.

I know a lot of women who started their dreads when they were in their 40s and 50s. They look awesome!

Thanks for the feedback- i worked in inner city schools and i knew black ladies who rocked the dreads in their 50s and beyond (just not at my school with my principal), but i worry i am just too white.

I would actually probably just let them come in naturally. I have pretty wavy hair and it dreads up in the back daily. I would cut them off if i wanted them out anyway, my blonder hair is very fine (but i have a ton), so combing out dreads would leave me with a bunch of super damaged hair. I am really thinking about this! eek!

eta: huh, i should wash my glasses occasionally.

You can never be too white for dreads. :-)
