Today is awesome, you guys. It is REPEALED. All it needs is Obama's signature, then Don't Ask Don't Tell is OVER!

DADT has not been repealed yet. The vote for cloture passed 63-33, which is an excellent sign, but the actual vote to repeal DADT will take place around 3 today. Currently senators are still making speeches about it.

Finally!

I'm still kind of pissed that we have to spend years of studies and focus groups to ensure that no one will be offended before giving people a very basic civil right - the right not to be fired from their jobs just for disclosing your sexual orientation as something other than heterosexual. But I guess at least it got passed.

I also assume that it was part of the horsetrading to get the tax cuts for the weathiest 2% passed, so that Obama could put one in the win column.

It sucks that the DREAM Act is dead though. It sucks that there are children who came here illegally through no fault of their own and after having spend their whole lives in the US still live with limited opportunity under the threat of being arrested like criminals and expelled/repatriated to a country they don't know at at any time.

Cool. I'm not really a big fan of the military, but I am a big fan of ending employment discrimination and this is a big victory.

GlueGun (8) thought DADT was a good thing: "Then they don't have to be in the military!" We explained to him that some people really want to be in the military.

Yeah. It makes me really sad for so many of my students my last year of teaching. Most of them immagrated as children, and felt like Americans, but you know, they were like 1 year old when they got here, so no dice. I guess despite their brilliance and working hard in school, they will still just be lucky to get any job whatsoever, and no college. It was heartbreaking to think of some of my most promising students being stuck in the end, unless maybe they joined the military to get citizenship that way.

But at least if they are gay, they can use the military route.

Here's what I wonder: Approx. 10 years ago, John McCain said he supported overturning DADT. This year, John McCain did a 180 degree turn deciding that keeping DADT should be his big platform. I wonder if it was a reaction to his daughter and wife having been vocal supporters of overturning Prop 8 in California and Meghan has publically stated that DADT needs to go even though her father will fight it.

His actions over DADT felt like a complete survival reaction - as if the Republican "brass" said, "John, keep your family in line or prove you are on our side." Honestly, it feels like John McCain has gone from maverick who will do what he thinks basically right and is in the interest of the country to someone who will do anything and say anything to stay elected and hence relevant.

Meghan McCain may be the hope for future Republicans being more socially moderate and really looking at the issues at hand.

I agree with your uncle, I'd be scared if John McCain was sucking anything of mine...

This is so exciting! It really does suck about DREAM act...I know people who would have directly benefited from that. I just don't understand how anyone could have reasonably been against it.

This is just McCain's M.O. He argues against his own positions all the time. He has no integrity or credibility.

I'd be willing to bet most of the people screaming about how it's going to destroy the military never served. The Republicans insisted on waiting until the Pentagon was done with their survey to make any kind of decision and then when that survey showed that most of the soliders didn't care about DADT they questioned the survey.

It almost irritates me how Congress passed this so quickly, now that they know their time is limited. Why didn't they have this sense of urgency for the past 2 years? Think of how much they could have accomplished.
