Okay this is weird, I know. Tilly the Pug got spayed part way through her first heat (3-4 months ago maybe?). Anyway, I don't know if anyone has ever noticed the smell that goes along with dogs in heat? Tilly frequently makes that weird heat smell even though she's now spayed and not in any way visibly in heat.

Anyone?

a lot of groomers will do it too. I mention that because I am a groomer and sometimes when I express them their behind still stinks and they need a bath. If you get her a bath at a groomers they will do both (make sure because I don't know if they all do it this way) and you won't have to worry about her still stinking. Or if she does since she is a small dog you can always bathe her yourself if her bottom is still stinky.

Do some dogs just leak the anal gland grossness? I thought the problem related to it not coming out, but our two (siblings) seem to "leak" sometimes. I have never had to deal with this before and it is really disgusting, as I'm sure you all know.

Ah! I briefly thought "groomer? no way!" because we pretty much only have PetSmart but I did remember a place I took the other dog too a month or so ago and she was good. Thanks!

I would say probably. I used to have a dog who would purposely spray his when he was scared! GROSS.

Generally the anal glands are naturally expressed when the dog defecates. Sometimes this doesn't always happen; which is why groomers, vet techs, and yes, guardians too! will sometimes help out in this area. It's not impossible to have a "leakage" problem; of course, you'll want to make sure (with the help of your vet) that there isn't some sort of issue causing it, such as the glands not naturally expressing themselves, getting "overly full," and then leaking.
I know it stinks, but fortunately it's not too much to clean up!

If it smells fishy and poopy, it's probably anal glands.

Okay so I called the on post Vet (we live on an army post) and they said it'd be $15 to do the glands plust $10 for whatever plust $5 for whatever. The groomer said $6 but they only do the outer ones. I didn't know there were inner and outer - wth?

Holy shiitake, how much does the on-post vet charge for other things? I never got Chester's butt juice squeezed out there but that seems really high. Our office visits used to be $7 and then they changed them to free. Bonny's eye goop that was normally $25 a tube was $10.

I have a list somewhere. It's mostly cheaper but apparently not anal glands. It was a $15 cleaning fee and $10 to see the tech and when she added $5 I zoned out and decided to call the groomer. I do theorize that Fort Bragg is trying to drive me over the forking edge though, so...

That is pretty high. Normally the procedure should be about $15. There are only 2 anal glands, both on the inside; most groomers are able to express the glands from the outside (i.e., no rectal penetration), but it may not be quite as thorough of a job (both hence the lower fee).

If you're low on funds, maybe just have the groomer do them, and have he or she give you their professional opinion of the status of the glands (yeah, I know it sounds funny); that is, how full they are, depending on how full they are, how often should they be expressed, or is there another issue altogether?
