I heard this on the radio on my way home tonight and almost drove into a tree in my astonishment. I don't know why I continue to be surprised, but the bottomless ignorance of the tea party seems fresh and new every time!

My favorite part is how she smiles at the derisive/incredulous laughter because she doesn't realize they're laughing at her.

My favorite okcupid dating story so far: I went on a date with a guy whose brother dated this head case for 2 years! And yeah, she basically practices what she preaches.

The media are calling this a "gaffe," but it's not so much a gaffe as a sort of cultural disconnect: it's commonly held among Evangelicals that separation of church and state doesn't appear in the constitution, that the concept is a distortion of the founders' intent created later by the liberal courts. I don't think this a case of mere ignorance.

I don't know. She did seem ignorant of what language is found in the First Amendment. (Although her opponent didn't accurately quote it.)

I don't think this a case of mere ignorance. I'd call it a combination of disconnect + ignorance - she remembers hearing someone say that the words 'separation of church and state' aren't in the Constitution, but she's not aware that the establishment clause exists. Anyway, I'm glad she's around. Delaware would almost certainly have gone for the Republican she beat in the primary - now it's going Democratic.

I love how she keeps asking again and again at the end about it being in the First Amendment. Something doesn't become less stupid with frequent repetition (despite what the Tea Party seems to think).

I got the feeling that she was building up to the gotcha moment when she was going to announce that separation of church and state doesn't appear in the first amendment, but ended up bungling it entirely. Watching it again, I think nothingtosay's assessment is probably accurate. I love how she doesn't seem to realize that the audience are laughing at her, not with her.

When she had her head down and seemed to be taking notes, I was just thinking 'wow, she must be so embarrassed'. I almost felt bad for her. But when she just kept saying it... yeah, it just got painful to watch.

I kept watching her opponents face. Especially when he took that drink of water and started refilling his glass. It looked like he was really controlling himself from bursting out into laughter.

I am particularly fond of how she says that "creationism" and "intelligent design" are two different things. It is quiet, but she does say that.
And really, Tea Party people, could we maybe take a year off and train your candidates? Just a thought.

I don't have to do another goddamn thing except sit back and watch her self-destruct!" The fact that she remained completely oblivious to the fact that she should have been embarrassed added that extra layer of cringe-inducing awfulness.

I think you guys are being a bit unfair- its not like we should expect our senators to actually be familiar with the Constitution.

I want to figure out a way to be O'Donnell for Halloween. The best thing I can come up with so far is to dress up halfway like a witch and when people ask me if I'm a witch, reply with -- "No, I'm you."

The fact that people who spout this nonsense are given any shred of respect, let alone elected to a public office, completely boggles my mind.

She scares the bejeezus out of me, which I guess means she is a fantastic Tea Party candidate.
