So, I have somehow lost my metal colander which used to serve as my makeshift steamer insert (I think my old roommate pilfered it). Are there any other ways to rig a steaming contraption for steaming seitan out of a lidded pot and other very basic kitchen items?

I know the steamer basket things are fairly cheap, but the one's I've seen are small and have that awkward rod that sticks up in the center. Has anyone successfully used one of these to steam sausages or seitan as in VV?

I've read murmurings of using a metal can and a plate or something with a lidded pot.

I've also heard mention of baking the seitan in a few inches of water. Anyone out there do this and have any guidelines for converting recipes that call for steaming?

You can just steam it in a few inches of water too.

I've steamed seitan on those flying saucer shaped baskets just fine. Alton Brown has fashioned steamers from a disposable pie plate punched with a fork and set on something (small bowl or biscuit cutter?)

You can also set it on an upside down salad plate and steam it..

You can wad up some extra foil into balls and lay the seitan on top of those to keep it from soaking in the water.
