Quote:
RALEIGH, N.C. ( KTLA) -- Former presidential candidate John Edwards has reportedly proposed to mistress Rielle Hunter just weeks after his estranged wife Elizabeth Edwards died of cancer.

The National Enquirer is reporting that Edwards proposed to Hunter just three weeks after burying his wife of 33 years. The Enquirer initially exposed the 2008 affair between Hunter and Edwards. The two have a now 2-year-old daughter, Frances Quinn, together.

According to the tabloid, Edwards introduced his three children with Elizabeth to Rielle and Frances Quinn at a North Carolina restaurant last month. The paper quotes an unnamed source as saying, "John pledged his undying love, and promised her that one day they would all "become one big, happy family." Rielle also allegedly told Edwards' children to "Call me Mommy!"

I can't believe both of them are so tone-deaf and selfish. Even their actions up to now haven't been as callous as this.

I heard on the news yesterday that he moved into Elizabeth's house after her death so he could be with their children so they have some sense of normalcy as a family... I'm sure this is going to go over well.

I hate him (and I don't say that about many people). Those poor kids; what a douche.
(NB this is Desdemona posting on VoR's account, but he also thinks JE is a douche, so it's all good!)

I'm pretty sure Elizabeth Edwards is turning in her grave. I think this is the thing she wanted least. I can't imagine him thinking of his children and deciding "yes this is best."

I can in a 'we need a family!" crazy sad, selfish way.

His children needed a family before but he went and forked that up by messing around with Rielle. What is the point in marrying someone who doesn't take marriage seriously?

I can see him doing this in a "this will make life easier for me." way. He needs to take care of his children with Elizabeth, and now Rielle "Call me Mommy" Hunter will be able to help him do that, and will help him manage their feelings with her "spiritual growth" stuff and take his side, and make him feel better about himself.

And she is doing it because it finally gets her hooks all the way into him.

I don't wish anyone ill, but I don't think that kind of selfishness bodes well for any of their children or ultimately for a lasting healthy marriage.

I hope there's something in place where Kate can take the twins :(

Kate is the executor and also got everything in the will. Elizabeth also named her the guardian of the children...
I don't really know how that works since the father of the children is alive, though.

I can't remember which one's publicist issued the denial, but one of them did (I think it was Edwards). Then again, the National Enquirer was the first to break the whole Edwards/Hunter story to begin with. Either way, he's a forking douche. So is she.

I'm not as disgusted by the fact that they're getting married as I am by the timing of his proposal. He couldn't have given his kids some time to adjust and come to terms with their mom's death before announcing that he's marrying his mistress? This really makes it seem as though he was just counting the days until his wife kicked the bucket so he could propose to Rielle. So gross and tacky.

I know someone who took care of a dying wife after his marriage was basically over. He proposed and married his girlfriend within a year of his wife's death. One of his children performed the ceremony. There were many extenuating circumstances. In the end, nothing is as simple as John Edwards is evil and Elizabeth was a saint.

Yeah my ex had an apparently crazy mom (I never met her - she went into a coma on Valentine's day and died a few months later) and his dad remarried a very lovely lady within a year. Apparently the two had never been happy. Anyway. John Edwards indeed = pond scum.

I'm considering picketing the wedding :P~

I think I have a bigger problem with the "call me mom" thing. Elizabeth was the children's mother. There is no replacing her.

I don't think it's anyone's business. Perhaps Rielle will be a really good mom to the kids. Perhaps they aren't actually engaged. Perhaps they have been for a long time. Maybe the two children like her. Maybe they don't. If the media really gave a crepe about Elizabeth Edwards they'd stop splashing her kids all over the front page. Leave 'em alone.

What is it with politicians and shitty stuff like this? Anyone remember how Newt Gringrich gave one of his wife's divorce papers while she was getting cancer treatment...
