Camping is fine! Normally campsites have showers, toilets, places to plug you hair dryer in and everything. Plus you get camp fires!

This is true, I've never been camping without my hairdryer!

If people really aren't up for normal camping I like the fancy camping idea more than the big house idea but mainly because it'll be cheaper. If we book a house for 10 people and 2 pull out last minute / don't show up we'll still have to pay the full amount whereas at a campsite you just pay per person / per tent & it's easier to book / pay separately.

The only experience I have of camping is at a festival, which is why it was horrific. I will camp if there are showers and toilets. I can't deal with portaloos!

To rent any sort of property I don't think there'd be any way to do it but to take money in advance from people. For health reasons I probably won't be up for camping (not to do with showering- I'm a skanky hobag), but if that's the majority preference then maybe I'll visit for a day if it's local enough!

I'm up for going anywhere, I love the South West a lot & I feel like it'd be nice to have a meet up that's not in Brighton or London for once. I'm also cool with it being in the school holidays - it was your idea so you have to be able to come!

I'd like it to be cheapish because I don't have a job at the moment but if camping's not an option for people I'm cool with that.

what you may need to bear in mind is that a great deal of campsites in england (specifically; scotland isn't as restrictive) don't allow you to have open fires, only barbeques that are supported off the ground.
but if you're not gonna be going camping then obviously it's not an issue!

If I can get down with the camping (as a fancypants) so can you all.

Camping is the way to go for me but we'd need one where you can have fires so I can show off my many years of open fire cooked hippy slop prowess.
I can probably also rig up showers and heaven knows what else (sweat lodge etc) if required as long as we can have fires.

I think part of the problem with the camping scenario is that some of us might not have any camping gear whatsoever, and that shiitake can be expensive. At least as expensive as renting a room. Also, unlike camping gear, I don't have to find space for renting a room when I get back home.

I'm sure there's somewhere where we can do both. We could go to a place where they have static caravans (with beds!) and a campsite?

Now that is a great idea! Or even the kinda camping with fancy teepee tents with beds & ordinary camping?

It won't be that easy to find a place with both types that also allow open fires but if we all get googling...

I've been looking and this site http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/articles/view.asp?id=4 seems to list the campsites that allow fires, it takes you to a page that shows whether tents/caravans/static caravans etc are allowed.
I had a quick look, this place looks really nice http://www.luckfordleisure.co.uk/camp.html the other site says that it has statics for hire but I can't find that on the website, I've e-mailed to ask. They let you have fires (it seem actively encouraged actually!) and they have a store of wood. You can also ask for a more secluded spot so we could be away from families and people who might not want to hear PPK talk of periods, vegan farting and the dangers of b12 deficiency.

Most importantly, it's near MONKEYWORLD!

This looks pretty awesome Ms. Lopez! MONKEY WORLD! Those tree shelters/timber tents look pretty sweet, and as long as we had a few people it could be reasonable price-wise. Dorset is good for Mr Hana and I location wise.

While the Luckford website is horrible, it looks like a pretty good option (especially if we can hire caravans). I hope it's a good price.

did you read the rant about planning permission at the bottom of the page?! Also, I could probably find us some kind of horrible chemicals to chuck on the fire to make it pretty colours if we'd like to save some money!

I just skimmed most of the page, to be honest.

I was about to have a right freak-out over the (potential) price of train tickets (once I figured out which train station was closest). Then I looked at Edinburgh-London-Wool/Wareham (the two closest stations) instead of Edinburgh-Wool/Wareham (via London), and it's way, way cheaper to book the two journeys separately (for anyone concerned about coming from anywhere far away). But it's still a total of about 8+ hours on the train. Oy.

Yes, it made me smile. The personal stuff about the people with links to the council who were granted planning permission, the WIFE accepted leaving presents then returned to work in another part of the council! Scandalous!*

*I can pretty much get involved in anyone's gossip and conspiracy theories no matter how irrelevant to my own life.

That looks great Holley! I wonder if you could put a tent next to a static caravan? I'd like to sleep in a tent 'cuz it's fun & probably cheaper bur not if it was far away from everyone else! Also my tent's forking heavy & I'd want my airbed so bringing a tent'd probably only work if I drove - I say 'I', I mean Nick (if he can get the time off) or someone else because I can't drive! Road trip?!
