It’s been way too long since we’ve had a bake sale around here, hasn’t it? Sea Shepherd is currently in the Arctic Ocean waiting for the whalers and MooShoes has been kind enough to offer up their space to raise money for Operation No Compromise. Yes.

When: January 23, 2011 from 12:30 to 5:30 PM
Where: Mooshoes, 78 Orchard Street
Who: Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, NYC Chapter
RSVP: Facebook Event Page
Sign up to participate: Google Doc

Since the crew is down in the land of ice and snow, we thought it would be fun to make this bake sale Winter Wonderland themed, so break out your snow flake cookie cutters, coconut snow balls and other wintery treats (not that we’d turn away whale shaped cookies or other nautical awesomeness! Or anything delicious, really).

Sea Shepherd NYC volunteers will be on hand to sell merch and answer any questions you may have about the campaign. They’re also the people to talk to if you want to become a member or sign up for the Direct Action Crew. Last year, Sea Shepherd cut the Japanese whaling fleet's quota by 50%. Let’s help them cut it by 100% this year. All while hanging out with fabulous people and eating delicious food.

The Boring Details:

MooShoes will be opening its doors to us at 12 PM to set up. If you are bringing food, supplies, etc. PLEASE arrive at the store by 12 PM. We will need time to set up the bake goods as well as our merchandise and literature table. Once you’ve dropped off your stuff, room might be tight, so please don’t hate us if we ask you to step outside until we’re ready for the shopping to begin. Weather permitting, we’ll have chalk on hand for people to write things like BAKE SALE FOR OCEAN CONSERVATION on the sidewalk.

LABELING: Please prepare a card or print out with the name of the baked goods you have prepared and a note of anything special about it (gluten free, soy free, nuts, etc.) Additionally, please label its container with the same information and attach a piece of paper with the ingredient list, including the ingredients of the products you used to make the baked goods. That includes either the name and type of your ingredients (e.g., Whole Foods Vegan Chocolate Chips, Earth Balance made with olive oil, etc.) or include the ingredients of that product.

CONTAINERS and UTENSILS: If you want your container back at the end of the bake sale, please label it with your name. If your baked good requires cutting, scooping, tonging, flipping, spatulating or anything else, please bring the appropriate utensils. Please label them if you want them back and please either pick up the containers and utensils around 5:30 PM or make arrangements for someone to pick them up for you.

Not sure if I'll be able to bake anything yet, but I'll definitely stop in to buy stuff.

Awesome, sashi! I haven't seen you in AGES!

I feel you should be there too, panda. But I'll be wearing the little apron you made me and pour out some hot chocolate in your honor.

I'm getting really excited about this. I can't wait to see people there and hope some PPKers will be able to bake for it too!

Awesome! Yes, we definitely do! There's a Google Doc linked in the top post where you can see what other people are making and sign up to bring something (so we don't get 17 different brownies and no cupcakes). Thank you!

I really want to come in too, and even getting to say a quick hello to RandiJM and all the awesome PPKrew would be most excellent.

Tofulish hugs = best bakesale item.

What should I make? I was thinking it needs more savory things - maybe the tomato-rosemary scones? Should I made them, maybe a 2nd type of scone too? What other savory baked goods are there that are within my abilities (i.e. no yeast :) )

Yes! I really hope to see you there, Tofulish!

Hrm. Scones sound awesome, RandiJM! I love the tomato-rosemary ones; they're so pretty and red! If you want to do something else savory that isn't a scone, maybe a muffin?

Your asparagus muffins were so good and they flew off the tables at the last sale we did. YUM.

I do love those, but feel bad about making them out of season.

I found a recipe for cookie dough topped brownies today. It may be fate.

From vegweb?? I made those a few years ago! But they had a 3rd component too, like ganache or something crazy. My family went nuts. I don't think they are on vegweb any longer (because they were too dangerous or something?).

Nope, this one: http://sayhellototheangels.tumblr.com/p ... d-brownies

It needs veganizing, but looks amazing.

I found the one I made years ago! It's from vegweb but I saved it in a word doc. It is brownies topped with cc cookie dough topped with chocolate glaze. If anyone wants it just ask :)

I'm excited for Sunday! I can't stay long bc I am bussing back to Philly but I'll get there at noon. Who do I ask for? How will I know who the PPKers are/who I can trust?

I'm going to post it bc I found it from a public website. The creator was like a pastry chef or something like that, in school. She had amazing stuff.

Also - on topic - I'm going to make speculoos spread cookies for Sunday :)

Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Brownies
2 1/2 cups unbleached flour, divided
1/2 cup cocoa powder
2 cups brown sugar, divided
1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
3/4 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
3/4 cups brewed coffee
3 teaspoons vanilla extract, divided
3/4 cup + 2 tablespoons soy milk, divided
1/3 cup vegetable oil
Remaining Ingredients:
1/4 cup vegan white sugar
1/2 cup vegan margarine, softened
2 cups vegan semi-sweet chocolate chips, divided
1 tablespoons oil, shortening, or vegan margarine

Directions:
To Make the Brownies:
1. Pre-heat oven to 325F. Prepare a 9×9 pan by greasing it and then lining it with parchment paper.
2. Sift together 1 1/2 cups flour, cocoa, 1 1/2 cups brown sugar, baking soda, baking powder and salt.
3. In a separate bowl, stir together the coffee, 2 teaspoon vanilla extract, 3/4 cup soy milk, and vegetable oil.
4. Combine the wet and dry mixes and stir well. Pour the batter into the prepared pan, and bake for 25 minutes, or until an inserted toothpick comes out clean.
5. Cool on a wire rack completely.

To Make the Cookie Dough:
In a large bowl, combine remaining 1/2 cup brown sugar, white sugar, and 1/2 cup margarine; beat until light and fluffy. Add remaining 2 tablespoons milk and 1 teaspoon vanilla; blend well. Lightly spoon remaining 1 cup flour into measuring cup. Add flour; mix well. Fold in 1 cup chocolate chips. Spread over cooled brownies. Refrigerate while preparing glaze.

To Make Glaze:
In the top of a double boiler or in a microwave-safe bowl, melt remaining 1 cup of chocolate chips and 1 tablespoons of oil, shortening, or margarine. Stir until completely melted and smooth. Carefully spoon over the cookie dough layer; spread evenly. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before cutting and serving.

Awesome! Yes, Sunday the 23rd. When you decide, don't forget to put it on the list, please, so we don't have a bunch of people making the same thing.

Damn, RandiJM, those brownies sound AMAZING.

You can drop off your baked goods with pretty much anyone in a Sea Shepherd shirt. My name is Dayna and I'll also be wearing a little black apron pandacookie made me and have really poorly dyed red hair. And depending on how we're doing, I may look slightly deranged, but please don't let that put you off! I really want to meet everyone, especially a fellow Bjork fan.

Cool I'm excited! SSD I figured everyone should make the recipe you listed as well as the one I did. Everyone's new year resolution is to bake more right? Anyway I'm excited to meet you all!

So I thought it was yesterday. It says 1/23 right there I'm LOOKING AT THE DATE IN THE TITLE but I am not good with dates and I just thought "this Sunday." fork! So I baked and went yesterday...It was embarrassing...I don't want to talk about it...I'm so so sorry but I can't get to NYC for the real day! Dammit. I thought it was too good to be true that this fell on the one weekend I've been able to get to NYC since August...I guess I was right. Sorry! I'll tell everyone I know in NYC to go though.
