I wish I'd seen this sooner! I had two dalmatians growing up. They are wonderful and loving but yeah, need A LOT of work, attention, patience, and exercise. Looking back, we weren't the right family for two dogs like that. They were definitely loved and had good lives, but there was a lot of "what do we do with this crazy thing!?"

I second what the others said- dalmatians are sadly so overbred (thanks, Disney) that they have a huge amount of potential genetic issues- deafness, blindness, neuroticism, and skin issues. One of my dalmatians developed an ongoing skin problem and by the time she was an old lady had no hair left on her rump from all the constant chewing/scratching/infections, no matter what the vet did! I heard that a few years ago an enterprising breeder folded in some genes from outside breeds and was able to produce dalmatian puppies that were visually 'perfect' and had much lower risks for the problems dalmatians are prone to. But of course the AKC wouldn't recognize that because 'pure blood' is just so much more important than the individual's health or happiness! Grumble grumble...

I'm glad you're giving this little dude a second chance and that you seem committed to getting him trained and keeping him in a regular exercise routine! You seem much more prepared to handle the unique needs a dog like this has than my family was at the time. Good luck! Oh, and PICTURES!!!
